Airline crew tie 'crazy' passenger to seat

Published

Icelandair said it had to restrain a passenger on a flight from Reykjavik to New York City because he was hitting people, screaming profanities and spitting.

The incident was getting media attention after a photograph began circulating on the Internet purporting to show the passenger tied to his seat with tape and plastic restraints.

The man who posted the picture to the website Tumblr, Andy Ellwood, said it was taken by a friend on the flight.
Icelandair spokesman Gudjon Arngrimsson said the passenger was bound after his behavior became "unruly and threatening."

"To ensure the safety of those who were on board he was restrained by the crew and passengers and then was monitored for the duration of the flight for his own safety," he said.

He said he couldn't validate the photo's authenticity but said airlines commonly carry plastic handcuffs and tape to restrain potentially dangerous passengers.
The airline said police took the man off the plane when it landed at Kennedy Airport at around 6:30 pm.

Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the airport, told reporters that police took the 46-year-old man to hospital after determining that he was drunk. No charges were filed, he said. The passenger's name wasn't released.

Dating App busts iPhone theif

US: A New York City musician used a combination of technology, seduction, a hammer and a bribe to reclaim his missing iPhone from a confused crook.

Jazz trombonist Nadav Nirenberg says he left the phone in a livery cab on New Year's Eve. The next morning, the 27-year-old learned via email that someone was sending messages to women using a dating app on the phone.

Nirenberg logged on to the service and offered the man a date -- posing as a woman.

He even posted a picture of a pretty girl.

When the culprit arrived at Nirenberg's Brooklyn apartment building with wine, the musician greeted him with a $20 bill while holding a hammer -- just in case.

The thief handed him the iPhone and left without a word. AP

12 boys, 5 men, woman carrying baby with rifles, grenade launchers, drugs

MEXICO Mexican marines say they have detained an unlikely band of drug traffickers that includes 12 boys and a woman with a baby who possessed rifles, grenade launchers and drugs.
A navy statement issued Wednesday says the 18 people were caught on New Year's Eve in the town of La Estacion in the northern state of Zacatecas. It alleges they were carrying nine rifles, two pistols, two grenade launchers and packets of marijuana and cocaine.
The navy says the only woman in the group was carrying a baby girl.

It doesn't say what authorities did with the baby.
Twelve of the 17 male suspects are said to be minors.

Drug cartels often hire youths to work for them and many have been arrested since the government launched its offensive against traffickers. AP

Man kills grandmother in alleged TV show fight

Police say a New York man has killed his grandmother after they argued over what TV show to watch.
They say Clarence Newcomb was arrested Friday at the home he shared with 82-year-old Kathleen Newcomb in Kings Park, on New York's Long Island.
Suffolk County police say a man called them at 4:35 am to report the woman was lying on the floor. Officers say they found her dead.
Medical officials haven't determined how she died. No weapons have been recovered.
Police say 25-year-old Clarence Newcomb told them he and his grandmother had argued over what to watch on TV. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick says he doesn't know what shows were involved.
Newcomb is in custody and can't be reached for comment. Police say he's unemployed. He faces arraignment Saturday. AP

After 65 years, married couple dies hours apart
Married for 65 years, relatives say Clifford and Eva Vevea did everything together.

And with their health failing, their son, Kip Vevea, says they were ready to die together. The Crookston couple passed away of natural causes within hours of each other at Valley Eldercare Center Sunday.

Vevea says his 93-year-old dad and 90-year-old mother went dancing nearly every weekend when they were younger, painted the house together and were always close companions.
With their beds pushed together at the care center, a nurse asked Eva Vevea if she would like to hold her husband's hand one more time after he died -- and within hours she passed away.

The Grand Forks Herald says a funeral for the couple will be held Saturday in Crookston. The couple will be buried next to each other at a Thief River Falls cemetery. AP
