Thieves steal 5,000 honeybees from restaurant

HOUSTON: Thieves, who have yet to be identified, took off with 500-pound beehive in their pick-up truck from a retaurant in Houston.

The hive held about 5,000 bees and was worth about $1,000, reports a website.

The owner is not so worried about the honet, but he is desperate to get his bees back. After all, a single colony of bees can produce 200 pounds of honey a year. The owner also uses the bees to pollinate the restaurant's lemon trees.

According to CCTV footage, carrying off the hive from its crate in the pre-dawn hours took about two minutes as the thieves obviously knew what they were doing since they chose a rainy day when the bees would be less active than usual.

Apparently, bee theft is very common since they are short in supply. Beekeepers have started branding their bees and are careful where they keep the beehive safe from the bee-rustlers.
