Crazy World: Girl, 17, raped by 15 relatives

Published

INDIA: A teenager has accused 15 of her relatives of gang raping her while her own family members were away from home in a village near Indian town of Kanpur.

Police officials have denied the charge and not allowed her to file a formal complaint claiming that the girl is lying and it is a conspiracy hatched between brother and sister because of a family dispute. Officials claim that a medical examination proves their claim that the girl had not been raped, reports NDTV quoting PTI.

However, police is probing into the incident and the alleged rapist relatives were being questioned by the police.

Man without heart dies after six months

CZECH: A 37-year old Czech man whose heart had been replaced with two mechanical pumps died six months after the surgery.

The man used to carry batteries with him wherever he went. Two plastic pumps were fitted inside his body - to do the job of the right and left sides of the heart. The operation was done last April by Jan Pirk, director of cardiology at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague.

The man had claimed that he was feeling fine after the surgery, reports The Korea Herald.

The man, who was suffering from cancer, was not strong enough to undergo heart transplant, hence doctors came up with this alternative.

According to sources, the only other person who had undergone a similar surgery in Texas did not survive for more than a week.

Doctors mistakenly declare boy dead

CHICAGO: The parents of an 8-year-old boy who has had severe brain damage for years have sued a Chicago hospital, alleging that doctors pronounced their son dead, keeping him off his ventilator for hours, even though relatives continued to insist that the boy's eyes and body were still moving.

The lawsuit filed this week by Sheena Lane and Pink Dorsey on behalf of their son, Jaylen Dorsey, accuses Mercy Hospital and Medical Center of negligence in the February incident and alleges that nearly five hours passed before staff agreed to perform a cardiac ultrasound, which showed Jaylen Dorsey's heart was beating.

"You didn't have to be a doctor to see that the heart was pumping blood," the boy's father, Pink Dorsey, said at a news conference Friday.

The hospital denies the lawsuit's allegations, and said in a written statement that Jaylen arrived at the hospital after suffering full cardiac arrest for 25 minutes and doctors treated him for "an extended period of time" before declaring him dead.

"Despite extensive resuscitative efforts, Jaylen did not immediately regain a pulse and no heart activity was noted for several hours," the hospital said. "... While this is a very rare occurrence, extensive resuscitation efforts, medication and young age can result in a patient's heart function returning spontaneously. We hope for continued strength for Jaylen."

At Friday's news conference, the couple said Jaylen has had severe brain damage since age 2 and that his disabilities have kept him bedridden and on a ventilator. His father said that before going to the hospital, Jaylen would smile at family members and could hear them, but that he no longer does. He also said they would see Jaylen smile again "in heaven."

Their lawyers said that because of the ongoing lawsuit, they would not be releasing details about the boy's disabilities and condition.

According to the couple, Jaylen was taken to Mercy Hospital and pronounced dead on Feb. 18 after his mother found him unresponsive.

They say Jaylen's eyes continued to flick open, but that they were told that the lingering effects of medicine were causing that to happen.

"We're not doctors, so we just went along with what they told us," Dorsey said.

So family members began to plan a funeral for the boy.

But when other relatives arrived at the hospital, they gasped when they saw Jaylen's eyes opening, the boy's father said.

The lawsuit says the family had to demand that medical staff conduct more tests and that a cardiac ultrasound finally showed the boy's heart was beating.

His parents are seeking $200,000 in damages. The lawsuit says they suffered hours of "severe emotional distress."

The boy's parents also worry that the hours he was off his respirator while at the hospital may have worsened his condition. (AP)

Two off-duty officers shoot naked woman

US: Two off-duty Florida law-enforcement officers fatally shot an armed, naked woman who confronted them at a social gathering Saturday, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Hernando County, north of Tampa. The county sheriff's office said in a news release that the men were approached by an "armed, naked and irrational female." The news release does not identify the weapon, but it says "one or both of the law enforcement officers fired their weapons, striking the female." She died at the scene.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting in the Spring Hill community.

Authorities have identified the officers as Hernando County sheriff's Detective Rocky Howard and Tampa police officer William Mechler, who have served six and four years, respectively. Tampa police say Mechler was "off duty and acting in the capacity of a private citizen."

Lt. Cinda Moore, a spokeswoman for the Hernando sheriff's office, said in an email late Saturday that she could not immediately identify the woman or disclose the weapon she was carrying. She said she also could not comment on what the woman specifically said or did or whether she was told to drop the weapon, explaining that the FDLE is leading the investigation. (AP)
