Crazy World: Hotel boasts prison comfort

It offers 'some plumbing', 'intermittently open canteen' that serves 'dishes based on runny eggs'

AMSTERDAM: A budget hotel has taken to extreme advertising by promoting it as one of the worst in the world.

The Hans Brinker Budget Hostel says it "has been proudly disappointing travellers for 40 years", reports

In the ad, the hotel compares itself to a 'minimum-security prison' that offers 'some plumbing' and 'intermittently open canteen' that serves 'dishes based on runny eggs'. Yucky!

The other facilities proudly advertised on its website are "thin mattresses, grotty paintwork, metal lockers, doors that lock and rooms without views".

It also excitedly tells customers: "Now with beds in every room."

The ad further boasts: "The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel isn't just a cheap youth hostel in Amsterdam. It's a cheap, dirty, cold, poorly lit youth hostel in Amsterdam."

The quirky and sarcastic tone adopted by the hotel to promote itself has worked for them. The backpackers who make up the majority of the clients simply love the ad.

It's great for the hotel management as the clients expect the minimum of comfort from the hotel, thus making it a win-win situation for them.

'Uncle' picks up wrong child from school by mistake

US: A man who offered to help his friend out by offering to pick up his daughter landed in hot soup when he picked up some other girl from school.

He had to pick up his friend's daughter, six, from outside her Gloucester City, Philadelphia school. All he knew was that the little girl had had a haircut recently. He had last seen her a few weeks back, reports

So, when he saw a similar looking girl waiting outside school to be picked up, he assumed it was her. He even asked if the girl's name was 'Courtney' and the little girl replied in the affirmative.

However, when they were on their way home, the man realised the case of mistaken identity when discussing about a recent holiday the girl had allegedly taken, this one, he realised had not been on a holiday with her mum.

By the time he turned around to drop her safely back in school, he was asked to pull over by a police patrol car and arrested.
Law catches up with teacher who sexually abused four students in 1960s

US: The head of a northern Virginia private school says the school is "deeply disturbed" by the news that a former longtime teacher has been charged with sexual assaults involving four of his students from the 1960s.
Fairfax County Police on Friday arrested 73-year-old Christopher Kloman of McLean after a yearlong investigation.

Police opened the case after receiving a report from a 55-year-old woman who was a student of Kloman's at the Potomac School. She came forward after running into Kloman at the Washington Episcopal School, where he was teaching at the time.

Police say their investigation found three other alleged victims, all girls ages 12 and 14 when the alleged incidents occurred between 1968 and 1969.
"We are deeply disturbed by this news and our hearts are with the entire Potomac community, past and present, as we work through this difficult time," wrote Potomac School head Geoffrey Jones in a note to parents Friday that was reported by The Washington Post.
Kloman worked at the Potomac School from 1965 to 1994, police said. The school confirmed he was both a teacher and an administrator and said in a statement Saturday that it is cooperating with Fairfax County's investigation.
A message left at a telephone listing for Kloman's home in McLean was not immediately returned Saturday. Kloman is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, and the jail said he is set to appear in court Monday.
The Potomac School was founded in 1904 and has students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Approximately 1,000 students attend the school. (AP)
