AMSTERDAM: A 27-year-old man employed at creches in Amsterdam has confessed to sexually abusing 83 children, the Dutch prosecuting service says, a month after his arrest.

"During questioning, he confessed to having sexually abused 83 children,'' prosecution spokesman Franklin Wattimena said.

"The questioning continues, and we don't know whether he will confess to more.''

All parents have been personally informed of the man's claims, said Wattimena.

He was employed by at least two creches with children up to four years of age in Amsterdam between February 2007 and January 2010.

Student pays with life for being late to school

KARNATAKA, INDIA: Turning up late for classes proved fatal for an eighth standard student of a private school in the Indian state of Karnataka who collapsed and died after being forced to jog around the playground by the principal as punishment.

The principal of New English school in Uttara Kannada district asked Afzal Ahmed Fayaz, 14, to do three rounds of the ground for turning up late, despite the boy's plea he could not do so as he was suffering from fever for the past two days and had not been attending classes, reports Press Trust of India.

The principal, who has been detained by the police, forced Fayaz to do the first lap shortly after which he suddenly started gasping for breath and collapsed.

School authorities rushed him to a hospital, but doctors declared he was brought dead.

Birds drink themselves to death

ROMANIA: Dozens of birds found dead in eastern Romania drank themselves to death, the local sanitary and veterinary authority has revealed.

The starlings died after they ate grapes left over from the wine-making process, Romeu Lazar, head of the local DSVSA, told the Agerpres news agency.

The cause of death was determined after the contents of the birds' gizzards were analysed, he added.

On Saturday, several residents of Constanta, 260 kilometres east of Bucharest, alerted the authorities after they discovered dozens of dead starlings on the outskirts of the city.

They said they feared the birds had been killed by avian flu, but the DSVSA immediately ruled out that possibility.

The incident came after unexplained mass bird and fish deaths were reported in several countries, including the United States, Sweden and Britain.
