KOLKATA: Rabindranath Tagore's famous Shantiniketan has made headlines for a wrong reason. A grade five student of the famous school in Kolkata 'Patha Bhavan' was forced to drink her own urine for wetting her bed.

The school is run by the University started by the Nobel laureate Tagore, Visva-Bharati.

"We have received a complaint that a class 5 residential student of the Patha Bhavan was allegedly made to drink her urine as a punishment. A four member fact finding committee headed by former dean of students welfare, Aruna Mukherjee has been set up to look into the matter and submit its report to the vice chancellor of the University," a university spokesman told news agency IANS.

The hostel warden found the girl guilty of bedwetting and meted out the harsh punishment to her last weekend. The parents were outraged when they heard their little girl's tale. The female warden was roughed up when the parents rushed up to her to demand an explanation.

The parents filed an official police complaint and child rights' group has also demanded a report from the school and the University.

FLORIDA: A lifeguard who saved a drowning man's life has been sacked from his job. His crime? He left his section of the beach to help save the man from drowning.

When the 21-year-old was told that a swimmer in an unguarded area of the beach was in trouble, he could not say no, reports Orange.co.uk.

He had to race over some distance in order to pull the swimmer out of the dangerous water. He helped the swimmer till the paramedics appeared and took over.

The swimmer was admitted in intensive care after he was taken to the hospital.

The guard's supervisers were not happy and told him that he put the safety of the swimmers under his watch in jeopardy. A couple of his colleagues have resigned in protest. He does not regret his action and is not sad at losing his £5.30-an-hour job.
