Dead drivers 'can’t commit offences'

Dubai traffic police will cancel traffic fines committed by drivers after their death provided they are registered in the name of those drivers, the emirate’s police chief assistant was quoted on Friday as saying.

“We cannot cancel fines committed after a driver’s death…a dead driver cannot commit fines…this is illogical,” Mohammed Al Zafin said.

Zafin was reacting to public complaints that Dubai’s traffic police refused to cancel fines committed by drivers after their death.

“All fines issued in the driver’s presence will be cancelled after that driver’s death provided they are committed by that driver,” he told Albayan newspaper.

“We have found that some people take advantage of the death of a driver to escape paying fines…we urge the relatives of dead driver to come to the traffic department just after the driver’s death to close the deceased’s file.”

Zafin said police would thoroughly investigate applications when there is no proof that the offences were committed by a driver before death. “Our men have sufficient experience in this respect and can detect ill intention…they have instructions to consider human aspects in such cases,” he said.
