Man demands Dh1 dowry for daughter

A Saudi man seeking to marry his relative got a pleasant surprise when her father demanded only SR1 dowry for her wedding.

The girl’s father, Ayed bin Saud Al Asmari said he asked Ayed bin Hadi Al Asmari to pay a dowry of SRone on the grounds he is against “exaggeration” in dowries.

“The father also said he wanted to ease the burden on the groom so he can start a successful marital life,” Sada newspaper said.

The paper, which did not mention where in Saudi Arabia the incident took place, quoted Asmari as urging other fathers to follow suit and stop demanding high dowries for their daughters.

Dowries, the money paid by a groom to his bride under Islamic law, have spiraled in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries following the discovery of oil. In some cases, dowries and wedding expenses could exceed $one million (Dh3.7 million).
