HACKENSACK: A 43-year-old man who was threatening to hurt himself, stabbed himself repeatedly in front of the police and then hurled his skin and intestines to those who tried to approach him after the incident.

When the police arrived after they were tipped off about the man with the knife, they tried to enter the room where the man was holed up. He had stashed heavy furniture to keep the door closed and to bar anyone from entering the room easily.

The police officials managed to enter the room only to find the man standing in one corner of the room with a 12-inch kitchen knife in his hand, reports a news website.

The officials were hard pressed to subdue the injured man. They used two cans of pepper spray on him but they hardly had any effect on him. He was finally brought under control with the help of a SWAT team.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical state and he is said to have undergone an emergency surgery.

The man had a history of 'disorderly conduct' and has psychiatric issues.
