Mom shoots baby boy, 4-year old girl

Authorities say a mother fatally shot her 17-month-old son and 4-year-old daughter and then injured herself.

Tucson police declined to release the suspected motive behind Saturday night's shooting and declined to explain specifically how 25-year-old Perla Morales carried out her self-inflicted injury.

Investigators say 17-month-old Richard Rosovich Jr. died at his home, while 4-year-old Emma Rosovich was pronounced dead shortly after at a hospital.

Morales was booked on two counts of first-degree murder after she was released from a hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Girl clings to dead body

A heart attack probably caused the death of a woman whose body was found with a crying 6-year-old clinging to it in the middle of a reservoir, a coroner said Wednesday.

Putnam County Coroner Dr. Hari Chakravorty said an autopsy revealed that Pamela Kaner, a friend of the girl's family, did not drown. The 59-year-old woman suffered from hypertensive heart disease and "did suffer a heart attack," he said.

The finding is preliminary until toxicology tests are completed, he said.

The girl, whose name has not been made public, was rescued Monday when boaters heard her crying on Lake Gleneida in Carmel. They found her holding onto the body, loaded her into their boat and took her to shore.

Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson said the girl told police that Kaner, of Brewster, who was caring for her while her mother ran an errand, took her into the water and was holding her when something went wrong.

The bodies of drowning victims usually sink, then return to the surface as they decompose, Johnson said Tuesday. Kaner's body was retrieved by firefighters, who paddled out in a commandeered boat.

The girl was treated at a hospital but was not seriously injured.

The lake, about 730 yards at its widest, is part of New York City's water supply system, and swimming there is banned.

DEP spokesman Ted Timbers said no drinking water has been drawn from the lake for more than a year because it's part of a section that has been offline while a filtration plant is built in the Bronx.

The shore of the lake, which abuts the main road of the hamlet of Carmel, is littered with rowboats, most chained or cabled to trees. Johnson said the DEP grants permits for the boats. Signs on the shore say, "Recreation by permit. Entry for other purposes prohibited."

"She shouldn't have been in the lake," Johnson said.

Only ducks and gulls were on the water on Tuesday afternoon.

Kerry Browne of Carmel, a house renovator, said, "On a nice day like this, anybody would like to jump in the lake, but you know the rules." He said he hoped the girl would be able to recover from "holding onto a body like that."

Woman kill her fiance on wedding day

An eastern Pennsylvania woman who was supposed to be spending her first full day as a newlywed was instead in jail Sunday, accused of killing her fiance hours before they were to get married, authorities said.

Na Cola Darcel Franklin, 31, was charged with criminal homicide in Saturday morning stabbing death of Billy Rafeal Brewster, 36, in their Whitehall Township apartment.

At her arraignment by video from jail Saturday, Franklin — apparently unable to grasp that he was dead — pleaded to the judge, "You got to check again!" according to the Morning Call newspaper in Allentown.

After District Judge Donna Butler told her that Brewster had been pronounced dead earlier, Franklin wailed and covered her face in her hands.

"I want my family back," she said, rocking gently back and forth. "I want to go home."

When asked if she understood the homicide charge, Franklin wept and choked out the words one at a time.

"I ... did ... not ... kill ... him ... on ... purpose," she said, according to the newspaper.

Franklin and Brewster were to be married at 10 am Saturday, but police said they were called to the apartment shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday and found Brewster bleeding from the torso as he lay on the landing outside his apartment. He was pronounced dead a little over an hour later at a hospital, District Attorney Jim Martin said.

The Lehigh County coroner's office said a preliminary investigation revealed two stab wounds that resulted in a punctured heart.

Neighbor Steve Engel said the pastor who was supposed to perform the ceremony came to the building after not being able to reach the couple, and others who were apparently going to the wedding also showed up at the building throughout the day.
