Couple throw maid from their car, drive over her

KUWAIT:  A court has sentenced a Kuwaiti couple to death for beating and then murdering their Filipina domestic helper, newspapers in the Gulf state reported on Monday.

The criminal court found the disabled husband and his wife guilty of "premeditated murder" after throwing the maid from their car and driving over her, Al-Rai and Al-Anbaa dailies reported, citing the verdict.

No names were published in the reports, for the couple or the maid.

Newspapers said that based on testimony by one of the couple's sons, the wife beat the maid for days until her health deteriorated.

The boy told interrogators that his parents had said they were taking the maid to hospital for treatment, but that he never saw her again.

According to the ruling, the couple took the maid, who was "unconscious" at the time, to a remote area in the desert where they threw her from the back seat of the car and then drove over her until she died.

About 73,000 Filipinos -- 60,000 of them women working mostly as maids -- live in oil-rich Kuwait, where some 600,000 domestic helpers, mostly Asians, are employed.

Dad jumps with toddler from bridge to death

AUSTRALIA: An international rugby referee who taught at a school in Australia threw his baby son off  Brisbane's 243ft-high Storey bridge before jumping to his own death.

The 40-year-old Jason Lees was an International Seven's Rugby Union referee and taught at a Grammar School as well.

The incident occurred when father and son rode on to the bridge in the early hours of the morning. The father strapped the baby into a babyseat and simply jumped over the safety rail, reports Herald Sun. The bike was left on the bridge, a witness told the paper.

The neighbours are in a state of shock and the reason behind the murder-suicide is still unknown.

SINGAPORE: A popular teacher in a secondary school was caught red-handed as he installed three pinhole cameras in a girls' toilet.

The Peeping Tom has been accused of committing a serious offence, reports The New Paper. A student made the discovery when she was visiting the rest room. She alerted the staff and upon further search, two more similar cameras were discovered.

The devices were disconnected and left in the staff room. Later they had disappeared from the teachers' common room. When the CCTV installed in the teachers' room was checked, the real culprit was seen walking away with the cameras.

The teacher was arrested.

Stray dog's barking foils prison break

PARAGUAY: A stray dog is getting credit for thwarting a prison break in Paraguay.

Officials say three dangerous inmates dug a tunnel about 26 feet (eight meters) from their cell to the street, and were about to break free just before dawn when the dog began to bark and alerted a guard.

Authorities at the Tacumbu prison on the southern edge of the capital dragged the unlucky prisoners before the media on Friday to tell the tale.

"Because of a stray dog we couldn't escape," complained Hilario Villalba. "When I reached the street, sticking my head out, the stupid dog barked and alerted a guard."

Villalba, who is serving a 30-year double-murder sentence, vowed in his native Guarani language that he'll keep keep trying to escape because he said his sentence isn't fair.

Meanwhile in neighboring Argentina, a yellow labrador named Tiza alerted border guards to a motorist trying to smuggle $110,000 in $100 bills into Uruguay. The driver denied carrying any money, but the dog sniffed out the bills hidden in the glove compartment, another compartment and inside the rear seats, Argentina's tax collection agency announced Friday.

I agree with Linda. You never hear the horror stories of the uneducated, underpaid maids terrorizing and exploiting their wealthy employers. How they manipulate their employers into giving them money, and a little bit of food, and then a straw mat to sleep on. The horror at all the poor, defenceless middle class families being pushed around by their terrible, conniving maids.

@Linda, You have to be kidding me Linda? Are you really trying to say that Maids take advantage of working women. First off, working women in the rest of world get by just fine without a maid. If you have an issue with your maid you can fire here. THAT SIMPLE. If she " harrass" you (even though I dont know how a maid can "harrass" a family), you can replace here. I hate how spoiled people are so quick to feel sorry for themselves.

We only get to see the crimes against maids. No one talks about how maids harrass families. Working woman can't do without them and the maids take full advantage of our situation.

What on earth has the world come to? I thought rapes were carried in isolated places so others couldn't come and help the victim. And now passersby are joining in? They should be sentenced to death!!!
