Saudi drivers shocked by ostrich running on road

Drivers in Saudi Arabia were caught off guard by an apparently frightened ostrich running aimlessly among their vehicles and hitting some of them after it broke loose from a farm in the Gulf Kingdom.

A two-minute film run on U-Tube showed the giant bird racing cars on a busy road and overtaking some of them before it was hit by a vehicle and thrown down on the ground. But it quickly rose up and resume its galloping.

Saudi newspapers said at least one million people had seen the film in just one week, adding that the world’s largest bird had apparently fled its owner in a farm in the southern rugged town of Abha.

The film showed the ostrich running at more than 50 km per hour and overtaking some cars before it went off the road and ran around a supermarket. It returned to the street after it could not find another route and kept running with an open mouth.

“It was screaming because it was frightened…some drivers tried to hit the bird to stop it but they could not,” Alhiad Arabic language daily said without making clear whether the ostrich was captured later.
