Saudi religious cops ban beauty contest

Saudi Arabia’s feared religious police quickly intervened to ban a planned beauty contest announced on social networks in the Gulf kingdom.

The announcement for the contest invited girls aged between 17 and 27 years to take part in the pageantry at a hotel in the Western town of Makkah and said a gold ring would be presented to the ‘beauty queen’ and other gifts to the second and third winners.

‘Sabq’ newspaper said the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which learned of the planned contest, rushed to the hotel and cancelled the booking. It said Commission members are also searching for the organisers.
