Smokers turned off detectors at tragedy-hit hospital

INDIA: 93 patients choked to death in a hospital in the Indian metropolitan city of Kolkata last week. The tragedy could have been averted if insensitive smokers had not turned off the smoke alarm throughout the nursing home in order to puff in peace on the sly.

Police officials told Indian daily Hindustan Times that the smoke alarms were connected to fire-sprinkler devices that had been installed at the AMRI hospital.

Authorities are now in the process of figuring out which employees used to regularly switch off the alarms to light up indoors.

The blaze had started in the basement car parking area around 1:30 am and the smoke was detected only about 3am. By the time the fire fighters arrived hours later, toxic fumes had engulfed the enire building.

The hospital was in the habit of storing medicinal goods and inflammable substances in the basement car park, while the cars were parked illegally on the sides of the narrow streets outside the hospital.

Woman stabbed to death for asking neighbours to 'turn down music'

UK: Little did a young mother realise that when she walked over to knock on her party-loving neighbour's door at 2am to request them to turn down the music, she would never walk back home alive.

A heated argument followed her request, which led to her being stabbed, reports Daily Mail.

The woman collapsed on the floor and the paramedics could do nothing as she died of massive blood loss.

Sadly, the woman's little son has learning difficulties and she was a totally devoted mother. The child is staying with his grandparents.

Local chief fines Zimbabwe PM farm animals over wedding date

HARARE: A local chieftain has fined Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai two cows and two sheep for flouting a cultural law and marrying during the month of November, a local daily reported.

Local media had announced that Tsvangirai, 59, married Harare businesswoman Locadia Tembo, whose sister is a lawmaker for President Robert Mugabe's party, at a traditional ceremony on November 21.

The prime minister reportedly paid a bride price, known as lobola, of ê36,000 and 15 cattle to his new in-laws.

Twelve days later Tsvangirai announced that he was ending the relationship, claiming that he had paid the Tembo family damages after getting the woman pregnant with twins.

Chief Negomo of Chiweshe in Mashonaland Central fined the prime minister two cows, two sheep and ten metres of white fabric for having paid the bride price during the holy month of November.

His new "wife" was fined two cows, two sheep and a goat for accepting the offer.

Tsvangirai has made it clear that his doesn't recognise the jurisdiction of the traditional chief.

His first wife Susan died and Tsvangirai was seriously injured after a car crash in 2009.

Tsvangirai's spokesman Douglas Mwonzora dismissed the judgment as political machinations orchestrated by Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

President Mugabe's is seeking elections next year and to rally his divided ranks behind his campaign to defeat Tsvangirai.

No date has been set for elections to choose a government to replace the transitional power-sharing pact created after 2008 polls collapsed in a deadly spiral of violence that left more than 200 of Tsvangirai's supporters dead, according to rights groups.
