US authorities intervened to take back a teenage girl who travelled to Morocco without the knowledge of her parents to meet her Moroccan lover who befriended her through Facebook, according to a report in Arabic daily ‘Al Bayan’.

The US consulate official said 17-year-old Rebecca Arthur departed on Saturday from Mohamed V Airport in Casablanca to her country after the US federal authorities intervened, as the girl is a minor, and cannot leave without official permission.

Rebecca’s travel had triggered an alert in the United States, but a selfie she posted on social networking sites confirmed that she was in Morocco with her boyfriend.

Her parents informed Federal Security Service that on July 7 she left home telling them that she was going to California and that she had just a little over $25 on her.

Instead, she was headed to Casablanca from John F. Kennedy Airport.

However, Rebecca said she left with the knowledge of her parents. She said that she had contacted her parents from Morocco and assured them that she was safe and that she intends to stay in Morocco for two weeks.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Adalah said in a press statement that he was in touch with Rebecca for more than a year through Facebook and Skype. And that their acquaintance evolved into a romantic relationship. Adalah said that Rebecca stayed with his family as a guest with the approval of her parents.
