Woman gives bride Dh148K for having same name

A Saudi woman gave the daughter of her friend SR150,000 (Dh148,500) as a wedding present because she has the same name as that woman.

The woman walked into the packed wedding hall in the western Red Sea port of Qunfudah and presented the cheque to the bride.

“The present caused a shock to the guests and some of them expressed their resentment on the grounds such big presents could become a habit in the town,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq said.

The paper said the present was triple the SR50,000 maximum limit set by the town’s tribal chiefs and dignitaries for dowries, money given by the bridegroom to the bride’s family on their marriage in line with Islamic law.
