Woman swallowed ring, pawned it later

Charged with retail theft

A 38-year-old Sandy woman is accused of swallowing a $4,000 engagement ring from Macy's and pawning it off in Wendover.

Angela Winters Hardman was charged Monday in Salt Lake City with one felony count of retail theft.

Police say Hardman came to a Macy's in Salt Lake County May 13 and asked to try on an engagement ring. Security officers tell police the ring got stuck on her finger, and she used lotion to get it off.

An employee says Hardman handed over a security tag and a different ring with what looked like fake diamonds, but denied stealing the real ring.

Detectives who watched surveillance video confronted Hardman later and say she admitted swallowing the ring and pawning it off for $600.

Hardman's phone number is not listed.
