An artist has created a solid gold toilet that is available for public use at the Guggenheim museum in New York.

A toilet made of solid gold has been opened for public use.

Members of the public can now use the fully functional 18-carat bog for the price of entry into the Guggenheim museum in New York.

The loo was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, who named his interactive art exhibit 'America', and says his creation is about "ultimately reminding us of the inescapable physical realities of our shared humanity".

The Guggenheim museum said: "Its participatory nature, in which viewers are invited to make use of the fixture individually and privately, allows for an experience of unprecedented intimacy with a work of art.

"[It's about] making available to the public an extravagant luxury product seemingly intended for the one percent."
