A father has been ordered to pay $300 after pleading guilty to tattooing his three-year-old child.

Eugene Ashley, from Georgia in the US, had a tattoo inscribed on his son's shoulder that said "DB", which stands for Daddy's Boy.

Ashley, 26, was arrested in 2009 after the Department of Family and Children Services made a home visit and saw the tattoo, court testimony said.

It is illegal in Georgia to tattoo a child younger than 18.

"The boy was three at the time, but District Attorney Leigh Patterson said the tattooing had occurred a year prior," the Rome News Tribune reported.

"Patterson called the crime egregious and said the child told DFCS the tattoo hurt."

Ashley has also been ordered to serve a year on probation.
