Bulgaria ammunition plant blast injures 10

Ten workers were injured on Friday in a blast at a state-owned Bulgarian ammunition plant, rescue officials said.

It was still unclear what caused the explosion at the Terem-Tsar Samuil plant that specialises in dismantling outdated ammunition, fire brigade chief Nikolay Nikolov told public BNR radio.

"We do not expect more explosions. There is no direct threat to the population," Nikolov said, adding that all workers at the plant in the western town of Kostenets had been moved a safe distance away.

The health ministry said 10 workers were taken to hospital for treatment.

Bulgaria has large amounts of ageing ammunition dating from the communist era waiting to be disposed of and similar incidents have multiplied in recent years.
