Xiao Wei, 25, was at work when a drilling machine sliced off his right hand. He thought he’d lost it forever. But he got lucky.

After seven hours of searching, with his severed hand on ice with no blood supply, Xiao found a hospital with the skills to save it, Sky News reports.

Dr Tang Juyu, the specialist located to help Xiao, told him the best way to save the hand was to graft it to his ankle until the arm could heal enough to re-attach the hand.

His severed hand was then successfully reattached to his ankle for a month.

Wei was shocked and frozen to the spot after the accident, until colleagues unplugged the machine and retrieved his hand and took him to the hospital.

Still very young, Wei, couldn't imagine life without a right hand.

The surgery was conducted in Changsha, Hunan province in November.

Initially, doctors said they would be unable to save his limb.

However, with the solution that the doctors offered he can now see that his hand has healed.

Nearly a month after his hand was severed; Wei had recovered sufficiently to undergo reattachment surgery.
