Mud-covered woman stuck on train tracks

Arrested barefoot, bleeding and covered in mud

A southern Indiana woman found "barefoot, bleeding and covered in mud" was arrested early Sunday after police said she drove her car onto railroad tracks and mired it in gravel just outside a tunnel, halting train service for hours.

April Hill, 22, of Greenville, was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 or higher and a felony count of disturbing a train bed. She was being held Sunday afternoon in the Floyd County Jail in New Albany. It wasn't clear whether she had an attorney.

Indiana State Police said in a news release the Floyd County Sheriff's Department received a phone call about 4:30 a.m. Sunday from a caller who said her sister had been in a crash and "that her sister knew she was in Floyd County on a set of rail road tracks but did not know her exact location. "

State and county officer began a search for the crash, and about 30 minutes later, Trooper Patrick Stinson "saw a white female climb over a steep embankment onto the roadway" along Corydon Pike southwest of New Albany.

"After talking to the female, identified as April N. Hill, it was determined she was the person involved in the crash. She was barefoot, bleeding and covered in mud. She was disoriented and did not know where her vehicle was located," state police said.

Norfolk Southern Rail employees found her 1999 Volkswagen nearby atop the tracks, about a quarter of a mile where it had left a road.

Train service was disrupted for hours due to the crash, police said.

Greenville is about 10 miles northwest of New Albany.
