Published

Fed up with being grossly overweigh for several years, a couple finally took the plunge and managed to cut their combined weight by 238kg over 19 months.

When Lauren and Justin Sheldon got married in 2008, their combined weight was 340kg or 750 pounds, according to www.asiaone.com. (https://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/grossly-overweight-couple-team-lose-238kg-combined-19-months#sthash.eGE2Bqee.dpuf)

Justin tipped the scales at 450 pounds and Lauren at 300. At their heaviest, Justin was 592 pounds and Lauren 341.

"But we just didn't care," Lauren says in a clip from the TODAY show.

Justin started gaining weight after a sports injury toward the end of middle school that prevented him from staying active. From there, he continued to gain weight until it got out of control.

For Lauren, the weight gain had begun in high school when she turned to food for comfort after facing some personal problems.

"I turned to food for comfort, whether it was happiness, sadness, anger, stress or excitement that I was feeling," Lauren told Huffington Post.

"Over the years it continued to pile on until I reached 341 pounds. Eventually, we just accepted that we were overweight and stopped caring," she said.

They did not change after marriage. They continued to have 1,270 calorie breakfasts consisting of three eggs, lots of bacon and pancakes smothered in syrup.

But the couple did finally wake up and realise their lifestyle wasn't sustainable. They lost as much as 238kg combined in 19 months!

Unable to afford hospital bills, man saws off his infected leg

A man in Hebei in China took matters into his own hands when the searing pain from a leg ailment became too much for him to bear, says www.asiaone.com (https://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/unable-afford-hospital-bills-hebei-man-saws-own-infected-leg>https://www.asiaone.com/)

According to a report on China Daily, Zheng Yanliang was diagnosed with arterial thrombosis of the lower limbs in early 2012.

The 47-year-old farmer from Qingyuan county had started to experience bouts of intolerable pain in his abdomen which would travel down to both of his legs.

He soon became unable to stand because of the pain. Tests showed that all of the arteries in his right leg were completely gone.

Arterial thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside an artery, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system. It can lead to oxygen deprivation and metabolic products such as lactic acid can accumulate. A larger thrombus causing a much greater obstruction to the blood flow may result in anoxia, the complete deprivation of oxygen and tissue death.

Zheng's condition quickly deteriorated with his legs beginning to fester and maggots crawling out.

The pain was so intense that neighbours could sometimes hear him screaming so loud that they could not sleep.

The family was too poor to afford the exorbitant fees demanded by local hospitals. "Ideally, I needed it to be operated on, but I could not afford it. They just gave me medication. They sent me home to die," Huffington Post quoted him as saying.

Finally, Zheng took a knife and hacksaw and cut off his almost necrotic right leg. Fortunately, because of the thrombosis, there was not much blood loss during the amputation.
