A US collegiate golf tournament was halted early on Tuesday after a branch fell from a tree near the 18th green and exposed a beehive, causing an estimated 70,000 bees to begin swarming.

The University of Texas at Arlington's Waterchase Invitational was called off after several people were stung, although none suffered serious injuries.

A beekeeper was called to Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth and said he would need at least an hour to conduct his work gathering the bees.

He also suggested people leave the area for the rest of the day, prompting officials to stop the event early in the final round. Players had completed about six holes in two hours when the round was halted.

Wichita State University's golf team was declared the winner based upon the 36 holes that were played on Monday.

Rafael Becker, a 20-year-old Brazilian playing for Wichita State, won the individual title.
