Arsenal’s biggest transfer threat: Diaby recovering

It is the same old story. As with Abou Diaby, so with Arsenal.

Yes, Diaby on form and fit is almost as lethal as Yaya Toure.

We say almost, because he just has not played enough of games to convince anyone, except perhaps Arsene Wenger, that he has the power and the fitness to last an entire season.

For flashes when he has been fit, Diaby turned Arsenal from a team with fancy footwork to one that had the belly for a fight and lung-busting box-to-box play.

Now, once again, we are informed that Diaby is on the comeback trail after his latest injury.

The Arsenal midfielder suffered knee ligament damage in March and is expected to be out of action until Christmas.

His 123 league appearances during his eight seasons with the Gunners have been marked by the sublime and the ridiculous.

Now Diaby has been quoted as saying, “I will start running again in a few weeks. I want to take my time with everything to ensure that it all goes smoothly.”

Besides all the right noises coming from the Arsenal board and Wenger himself about “big summer spending”, perhaps it is time for the Gunners to let Diaby go.

Buy Marouanne Fellaini instead? Yes.

Buy Wayne Rooney? If they dare, yes.

Just let Diaby go.
