Arsene Wenger is not only feeling the pressure of seeing Arsenal lying at the bottom of the Premier League table but also coming under flak from his peers for behaving like a sore loser.

Clive Allen, the Tottenham assistant coach, has described Wenger as “two-bob” after the north London derby descended into acrimony on the touchline at White Hart Lane.

The match had already been marred by abusive chants from both sets of fans, with Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp condemning what he called the “disgusting” behaviour of some supporters.

Wenger also came under fire after the final whistle. The Arsenal manager had shaken hands with Redknapp and Kevin Bond, the Tottenham assistant manager, and then walked past Allen.

It was not clear whether Wenger saw Allen, but the former Tottenham striker thought he had been snubbed and reacted angrily. Allen then pointedly offered his hand to Wenger, who ignored it and beckoned the Spurs assistant coach into the tunnel. Allen had to be restrained by stewards and police to prevent him from confronting Wenger.

“He refused to shake my hand,” said Allen. “He says he didn’t see or hear me. But he’s two-bob, he is.”

Claims that Allen – who barged into Wenger at the end of last season’s 3-3 draw at White Hart Lane – had sworn at the Frenchman were denied by the Spurs coach although the Arsenal boss accused him of making a needless show.

Wenger said: “Nothing happened. I shook the hand of the manager and the assistant. How many hands do I have to shake? Is that a prescription?

“No words were exchanged. If the story of the game is Clive Allen you must ask him. I shook the hands of the manager and assistant manager. I can only repeat that did he want to make himself the story? Yes.”

Redknapp added: “I didn’t really see what happened.

“Arsene shook hands with me and I was pleased with that. I think Clive went to shake hands and he missed him. He didn’t see him.

“If you’re going to shake hands, either do it and mean it or don’t do it at all. If he doesn’t want to, then he shouldn’t. Clive wasn’t happy.”

Of the abusive chanting, Wenger said: “We respect everybody and we want to be respected.”
