For all of Manchester United’s activity in the transfer window, the teams key to success will lie in their midfield prowess.

Rewind to the start of last season and the pace at which United kicked-off suggested they had that killer movement going forward.

That was down to one man - Tom Cleverley.

Then, Cleverley got injured and United never got their midfield back in action.

At least not until Paul Scholes had to come out of retirement.

Now, in what will be great news for Old Trafford fans, Cleverley is back in action and showed that he is on top form playing for Great Britain and the Olympics.

With Darren Fletcher also in training and Scholes still in the mix, Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that Cleverley’s pace and thrust will deliver the start they managed last season.

Whether it is Moura or Van Persie with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck up front will not matter if the likes of Cleverley and Phil Jones are bombing forward.

The thumbs-up for Cleverley comes from no less than Stuart Pearce – who said Cleverley would graduate into an England regular.

England under-21 boss Pearce said: "With the talent that's available, I think the way Cleverley can handle the ball he is an individual who can be in and around the senior England team. That's my opinion.”

Tom Cleverley scored in the shootout with South Korea.

"It's been a great experience for all of us and for the likes of Tom Cleverley, he has put himself in the shop window, both for their club and for their country,” Pearce said.

And United in the hunt for the title again.
