Wesley Sneijder has again been left out of Inter Milan's squad despite the club's insistence that it is not trying to force him into signing a new contract.

That may open the door for the Dutch midfield maestro to once again consider a switch to Manchester United.

And for Manchester United to consider a January swoop for Sneijder.

While scoring goals has not been a problem for United, it is a frail defence and more importantly, a shifty midfield that has cause Sir Alex Ferguson problems.

In a bizarre 4-3 win over Reading on Saturday, the defensive frailties of United were exposed.

As was their inability to boss the midfield.

It is unlikely that Johny Evans and Michael Carrick are going to win United a Champions League title.

Darren Fletcher is anything but fluent and Fergie seems reluctant to play Anderson and Tom Cleverley together.

This is why the Sneijder situation might tempt Sir Alex again.

A proved midfield general who can attack and defend is what United need as Paul Scholes fades into the background.

Sneijder has been sidelined for two months with injury but has now returned to fitness.

On Saturday Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni said the Netherlands playmaker could feature on Sunday against Palermo as "he has trained well this week."

However, Sneijder was not in the 22-man squad named later in the day.

Inter caused a stir a week ago when club director Marco Branca said Sneijder wouldn't play again until he made a decision about his future, and a new deal which requires him to take a pay cut.

Sneijder is set for talks with the club on Monday.
