Wayne Rooney will not be enthused to read the Daily Mail today.

The Transfer Column by Simon Jones reports that Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken to Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc about the transfer of the much-in-demand Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford in the summer.

The future of Wayne Rooney is far from certain at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho in his own special way has made it clear that there will be a spot for him at Chelsea.

Rooney’s contract will run down in 2015 and United and new manager David Moyes may even want to cash in on the striker who is in top form right now, making a summer switch possible.

Should Cavani come and Robin Van Persie stay, that might once again see Rooney drop down the striking order as it were; a major bone of contention under the Fergie reign for England international.

Cavani is being chased by several clubs and the Glazers might have to really splash the cash to pull him to Manchester – especially if the Red Devils finish outside the top four.

Cavani to Old Trafford, with Rooney to Chelsea.

Might not be the worst thing in the world for David Moyes.

Cavani and Van Persie with Juan Mata in midfield, Carrick as the enforcer, Januzaj on the wing… that only leaves the defence.

And that is the big problem for United right now.
