That Sir Alex Ferguson is second in the Premier League table and on course for a Champions League second round is only a measure of his management skills.

He has suffered an injury crisis like no other in his Old Trafford career.

His injury list reads like a who’s who of football’s future.

Still United are in the hunt.

All that is about to change.

Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and even Phil Jones are all on track to make their comebacks.

In fact, Fergie might have Smalling and Young on the team sheet for Stoke on Saturday.

Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia are back in the squad as well and with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck firing on all cylinders away on national World Cup duty for England, Fergie can look forward to having his best squad with him.

This raises the question of the future of two key United players.

Captain Nemanja Vidic, sidelined for another four weeks, and mercurial winger Nani.

A full strength United may well mean not having those two players any more.
