DEADLY DANNY

Manchester United are in danger of an over-reliance on Robin Van Persie that could harm them come the flurry of matches in December-January.

Danny Welbeck’s inability to come to the party leaves Sir Alex Ferguson with a similar headache to Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo.

Chelsea are nothing without their magic trio of Oscar, Mata and Hazard and are left exposed when even one of those players is missing.

The Chelsea problem lies with Fernando Torres as the United problem lies with Welbeck.

In the 3-1 win against Braga in the Champions League on Wednesday, Welbeck had a classic Torres game.

He did everything – chased back, held the ball up, created space – except the one thing that was needed – score.

When he did get his chance he fluffed it in an almost Torres-esque manner – unable to trap it cleanly in the ‘D’, handling it.

Inevitably he was withdrawn and Van Persie had to do the business.

January might see Sir Alex move for another striker simply because he needs more goal options than Van Persie alone.

Yes, Javier Hernandez is there, but he is a different type of attacking option.

With Wayne Rooney dropping deeper and playing the creative role, one more sure shot goal scoring striker is needed up front.

Danny Welbeck seems desperately short of goals and of confidence in front of goal. Just like Torres.
