England midfielder Jack Wilshere is set to face a probe after appearing to boast about betting on his team Arsenal, according to The Sun.

The 19-year-old Arsenal star has landed in trouble after suggesting he had placed a wager on a team-mate in a Champions League match, the report said.

Wilshere said on Twitter that fellow midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong was "worth a cheeky £10" to open the scoring at odds of 150/1 in Tuesday night's clash with Greek side Olympiakos.

The young England ace was not involved in the match himself as he has been sidelined with an ankle injury for several months.

And during the game, when Frimpong hit the goal's side netting with the score at 0-0, he tweeted: "Frimmy nearly won me some money there!"

European football's governing body UEFA was looking into the matter on Wednesday night.

All players are banned from betting on games involving their own sides, even if they are not taking part themselves.

Wilshere has a million Twitter followers and there were fears he may have encouraged them to bet and damaged the sport's integrity.

The storm blew up before the match when Wilshere tweeted: "Champions league tonight come on the Arsenal! @Frimpong26AFC 1st goal is 150-1... worth a cheeky £10 right?"

Wilshere's references to betting has since been deleted from his Twitter profile.

Betting on games is in breach of disciplinary regulations set by UEFA, which is in charge of Champions League fixtures.

A player found guilty of breaching betting rules could face a hefty fine and even a ban.
