The Municipality of Abu Dhabi has launched the second phase of its campaign of ‘No to Random Housing’, Emarat Al Youm has reported.

The campaign aims at regulating housing in the capital and the municipality said in a statement that the second phase will include the implementation of the rules and inspections to monitor over-crowding in residential buildings and villas.

The Rules

According to the Emarat Al Youm report:

-       The municipality states that as per occupancy rules the number of occupants per dwelling room may not exceed three persons (for authorised bachelors classes) in buildings.

-       It is prohibited to use or rent lounges and corridors in housing units for the purpose of sleeping.

-       Partition of units for leasing is only allowed with prior permission from the municipality.

-       A housing unit must be dedicated to one family only, whether the dwelling unit is an apartment, a detached villa or an independent villa.

The municipality confirmed that the campaigns aim to ensure no congestion in residential units and will continue until the end of the first quarter of 2015.

The first stage dealt with the monitoring and issuing of warnings.

This will now be followed by checking and the issuance of violations against those not complying. Violators will then be referred for prosecution.

The municipality noted that the campaign had achieved 90 per cent of its planned targets to monitor over-crowding in certain bottleneck areas of the emirate.

Abu Dhabi Municipality has also issued 230 warnings to companies in violation of requirements of housing for labourers, since June 2014.
