Abu Dhabi authorities have warned property landlords against packing their housing units with too many tenants and gave them until June to comply with the new rules.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality said all landlords must register their housing units at its offices within its new 'Tawtheeq' housing programme introduced by the municipality in line with a decision by the Abu Dhabi executive council (the emirate’s cabinet).

In a statement carried by the Arabic language daily 'Al Khaleej', the municipality gave property owners to complete registration of their units by the end of June.

“After the end of June, the municipality will impose fines against all those who do not comply with the new rules,” it said.

It noted that Tawtheeq programme bans the renting of apartments and villas in Abu Dhabi to bachelors as part of the emirate’s drive to ensure safety of residents and maintain the aesthetic image of the capital of nearly one million people.

Under the new rules, the number of bachelor tenants must exceed two in one room at any house, apartment or villa.

“All are called upon to abide by the new rules to preserve the rights of both landlords and tenants,” the municipality said, adding that it is in the process of setting up a housing data network for the emirate.

It set fees at Dh100 for registering a tenancy contract and Dh1,000 for registering housing data by the landlords. Other fees range between Dh5 and Dh100.
