Dubai to aid of off-work Kerala anglers

Members of Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) in Dubai have come forward to help fishermen community living along the coastal regions of the Indian state, who face poverty and economic uncertainty due to new restrictions imposed on fishing.

New trawling rules restricting fishing by came into force recently in the Indian state.

“Along with the Kerala State Muslim League committee which is working for the upliftment of the fishermen, we at the KMCC are also offering all the possible help including financial aid, Ramadan food kits, medicines, clothes and even repair of homes damaged in the season,” said Anwar Naha, President, Dubai KMCC.

About Rs2 million (Dh116,000) has already been raised by the Dubai Committee of KMCC and other district and local-level KMCC committees have been advised to raise resources for helping people back home, who living in the fishing zones of Kerala, he added.

“Overall we plan to contribute Rs30,000,000 (Dh1.73 million) for the project from various KMCC units in the UAE,” Naha said.

“Kerala Muslim League is running a campaign to help the fishermen community living in the coastal region suffering from poverty, unemployment and other problems created by the new trawling restrictions.

"The UAE KMCC committee has contributed Rs2 million. The amount for the Kerala Coastal Relief Fund was handed over to Member of Parliament, Abdul Samad Samadani, who was in Dubai,” Naha added.

In collaboration with the Community Development Authority (CDA), KMCC Dubai is organising free iftars in big labour camps. “We are not only distributing free iftar packets, but also Ramadan gifts. We are selecting labour camps in which more than 2,000 people live.”
