Dubai Municipality has launched a health campaign on social media, dishing out ways to keep Ramadan safe and healthy for residents.

With iftars often turning out into lavish treats, health experts at the civic body are urging residents to exercise post dinner to keep the calories in check.

“Sports play a great role in our everyday life.. The food control department has launched a new awareness campaign highlighting the importance of exercising after dinner and how sports prevent from diseases and enhance your health,” read the post on Dubai Municipality’s official Instagram account.

“Be part of our campaign, have dinner and exercise. Follow healthy eating habits to enjoy a better and healthy lifestyle.”

It has posted a few videos highlighting this.

One video shows how a serving of six pieces of Lgamat adds 358calories. The scene shifts to the outdoors, where 48 minutes of exercise helps burn the calories. This video is posted with the message; “No iftar is complete without the mouth-watering Ramadan desserts. Have your Iftar and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Another video suggests how a variety of exercises – walking, swimming and cycling – could help bring down the numbers on the calorie chart.

“Dubai Municipality provides tracks, parks and beaches to the audience to play different sports. Have dinner and train to stay fit.”

Principal Food Inspector Bobby Krishna has been dishing out important guidelines to avoid wastage of food during Ramadan through the twitter handle - foodsafetydubai.

“Let us eat safe and also waste less of food during the month. Here are some tips,” a tweet read.

“Cook what is necessary and do not cook too much in advance. Cooked food cannot be held for a long time and will become unsafe if not hot.”

“By reducing the quantity that's cooked, you can reduce waste. Plan well with family and guests to ensure that you know how much to prepare.”

Here are some tips to avoid food wastage

• Avoid random shopping

• Always check the expiry date

• Always be aware of the nature of products you buy as to which can be frozen, and which can be kept dried.

• Don’t serve full loaded dishes.

• Try to find out ways to make edible items with leftover food.

• Prepare the list of items to be bought.

• Always think about people who are dying without having food. Try to donate food.

• Use local items to discourage high level of carbon emission caused for transportation.

• Try to use leftover food as organic fertilisation to plants and trees.

Remember to “Take what you want, but eat what you take. Do not waste food.”
