Ramadan health: Hydration is key

Even as the month of Ramadan approaches its end, those fasting need to practice caution.

Over the course of the month, the body’s organs enter into a journey of maintenance and healing, as does the mind.

Fasting for nearly 15 hours each day, especially those who work outdoors, will need to be more mindful of the food they consume during iftar and suhoor to have an optimally nutritious Ramadan and Eid. 

Hydration is key for those working outdoors

Even though we are at the end of the fasting month, workers should not slip-up and continue to avoid drinking tea and coffee, especially during suhoor as these beverages contain caffeine that promotes urine production and dehydration.

Instead, those working outdoors should consume an array of fibre-rich food; sweet melon, for example, can retain water inside the body for up to 10 hours.

Similarly, they need to take particular care to avoid salty foods.

It is imperative for those who work outside to consume as much water as possible over the course of the night, drinking it regularly and in small quantities.

Pack in some exercise

Office workers often sit for long periods.

Take regular breaks, walk to and from the Masjid for Maghrib and Taraweeh prayers, along with colleagues. Exercise is important to clear the mind and aid the body in replacing old cells with new ones.

Additionally, those reliant on their concentration should try to replace simple sugars with fruits, honey and dates; however if they feel the urge to indulge, it is important to curb the amount to just one portion.

Break the fast the right way
 
Iftar meal should be light, varied and it should unify the entire family.

Dates, particularly ‘rotub’ or semi-ripe dates, are best for breaking the fast as they contain sugars that don’t rapidly raise blood sugar levels, and instead gradually elevate it.

The meal consumed after sunset should be made with high quality, nutritious ingredients such as minced meat, mushrooms, low fat cheese, vegetables and herbs, and it should not be fried.

Those fasting are also advised not to drink water or juice before meals or with them; they are best consumed independently from meals.
