Bollywood superstar and owner of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders Shah Rukh Khan performed at the opening of the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL6) in the eastern city of Calcutta.

Tuesday's opening ceremony took place at the Salt Lake Stadium and featured top Bollywood stars and international rap artist Pitbull.

The 120,000 capacity football stadium transformed into a kaleidoscope of Rabindra Sangeet, Bollywood dance and songs as the 2013 leg formally opened with all the nine team captains taking the ICC Spirit of Cricket Pledge, 'Play hard, play fair'.

Nine teams will play 72 Twenty20 matches over 54 days.

KKR will host Delhi Daredevils in the opening match at 6.30pm (UAE time).

Players from around the world will compete in the world's richest cricket league.

Eleven Sri Lankan cricketers will play in the tournament despite a political row which has seen them banned from the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government is angry over Colombo's treatment of its Tamils.

The Sri Lankan cricketers signed up to play in the Twenty20 tournament decided to take part despite fears for their safety.

They include top players like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews and Ajantha Mendis. They will have to stay out of their club teams when they play in Tamil Nadu.

Two players, Nuwan Kulasekera and Akila Dhananjaya, who were due to play for Chennai Super Kings franchise have decided not to take part at all, although they will get paid, according to BBC.
