Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has pleaded to president Asif Zardari to step in and prevent the sport from becoming a "joke" in the country, it has been reported.

The flamboyant all-rounder told Pakistan's Geo Super Channel that if he had been declared an incompetent captain by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), chairman Ijaz Butt should be held responsible for appointing him.

"It was Ijaz Butt who appointed me as captain for nearly a year and a half and if now it is said, I am not good enough and not capable of leading the team than the Chairman is equally responsible for this mistake and should also step down," Afridi said.

"I would appeal to President Zardari to take note of what is happening in cricket and stop the joke being done with it," Afridi said literally calling for the head of the PCB chairman.

Afridi was also outspoken about his reported dispute with head coach Waqar Younis.

"If they are saying I was responsible for the defeats in the last two one-dayers in the West Indies then that is not true. Because I didn't select the teams, they were selected by Waqar and manager Intikhab Alam," the former captain said.

He said throughout his tenure he had tried to maintain a good atmosphere in the dressing room which was the reason for the team doing well.

"I thought I was a hero after our World Cup performance but they quickly turned me to a zero," he said.
