India v Australia 1st Test: Tendulkar sparkles

India are 182 for 3 after 50 overs at close in reply to Australia's first innings total of 380 on the second day of the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.

India trail by 198 runs with seven wickets in hand and Sachin Tendulkar (71) and Virat Kohli (50) together having added 73 runs so far for the unbroken fourth wicket.

Cheteshwar Pujara (44) lifted India with a breezy knock after they lost both openers Murali Vijay and Virender Sehwag within the space of two overs with an enterprising 93-run stand for the third wicket with Tendulkar.

Pujara was bowled by a beauty from James Pattinson who captured all three Indian wickets to fall so far to finish with three for 25 off six overs.

Spinner Nathan Lyon failed to make an impressive going for 55 from 14 overs while left arm quick Mitchell Starc was wayward in line conceding 37 from 14.

Peter Siddle and Moises Henriques managed to contain the rampant Indian batsmen who launched a counter attack after the early loss of their openers.

Tendulkar got off off to a blazing start stroking Pattinson thrice to the fence after coming into the middle but settled down to play a near flawless knock.

He completed 7,000 Test runs, half of them against Australia against whom he has scored the most Test runs, but crafted his innings beautifully.

Tendulkar hardly put a foot wrong or showed indiscretion with the bat as he patiently compiled runs to frustrate the Australian attack.

His confidence seemed to inspire Pujara who hit six boundaries in a breezy knock of 44 while Kohli also got into his stride quickly stroking seven boundaries in his 50 which came off 84 balls.

Tendulkar has faced 128 balls for his 71 which contained six boundaries so far and the little maestro delighted home fans with his dominance in the middle.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a career-best seven for 103 to bowl out Australia for 380 during an extended morning session.

Nathan Lyon was the last man out after defying 12 overs to add 16 runs for the last wicket with James Pattinson.

Kohli took a superb catch at backward short leg as Lyon attempted to sweep Ashwin only to get a fine edge to give the off spinner his best figures in first class cricket.

Lyon faced 28 balls to make three while Pattinson remained unbeaten on 15 off 47 balls with one boundary.

Australia continuing from their overnight 316 for seven added 64 runs during an extended morning session with the overnight pair of Clarke and Siddle surviving the first hour with some dogged batting.

Clarke restrained himself before miscuing a lofted drive to Bhuvneshwar Kumar at long off off Jadeja to be dismissed for 130 after having added 54 runs for the eighth wicket with Siddle

Harbhajan Singh playing his 100th Test but coming to bowl after three hours was relieved to get a wicket when Siddle edged to Sehwag and finish with one for 87 from 25 overs.

Ashwin got his seventh wicket after India were frustrated by Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena and the last wicket pair Pattinson and Lyon before taking a delayed lunch.

Left arm spinner Jadeja finished with two for 71 for 36 overs.

EVENING SESSION

Virat Kohli completes his sixth Test fifty and second against Australia off 84 balls with a single off Lyon in the last over of the day.

Kohli has smacked Lyon through the covers for another boundary as he races to his half century.

Tendulkar has flicked Starc who is straying down the leg side to fine leg for his sixth boundary.

The 50 partnership for the fourth wicket between Tendulkar and Kolhi comes in 88 balls.
