India v Australia 4th Test: India drub Oz 4-0

MS Dhoni has hit the winning runs swinging Lyon to the midwicket boundary to lead India to a historic 4-0 Test series win over Australia.

Chasing a target of 155, India made 158-4 in 31.2 to rout Australia in the fourth and final Test with two days remaining at Feroz Shah Kolta ground in Delhi on Sunday.

India raced to victory with opener Chesteshwar Pujara (below) smashing an unbeaten 82 off 92 balls with 11 boundaries.

He was associated in a 104-run stand for the second wicket Kohli (41) who departed with India needing 32 for victory.

Pujara hit his second fifty of the match holding the innings together after they lost Kohli, Tendulkar and Rahane within the space of five runs in four overs.

Dhoni was unbeaten on 12 steering India home with an unbroken stand of 30 for the fifth wicket with Pujara.

The last time India won a Test inside three days was when they beat South Africa by eight wickets at Kanpur in 2008.

Only once before have Australia lost a series 4-0 against Ali Bacher's South Africans in 1970

It was only second time India beat Australia inside three days in a Test. The last instance was at Mumbai in 2004.

Australia's seventh loss in a row in India which is their worst performance away since losing six in a row in South Africa from 1967-1974.

"Credit goes to every one, the last one and a half years has not been great for us in Tests, but they showed a lot of character. You need to battle it out. That was the case in this series," said Indian skipper Dhoni who is the  first Test captain to win a Test series 4-0 despite losing all the tosses.

"I think it was an important series for us, there were a few changes in the side. It was up to the individuals to rise up and do well," he said as they take an international before regrouping for the Champions League.

"It was a hard fought Test, going into the game this is what I asked of the team. We gave it everything we had. We were up for it, but unfortunately things did not go according to plan with the ball in the second innings. We always thought 150-200 on that wicket if we bowled well was going to be enough ... as I said we just did not bowl as we wanted. Pujara batted very nicely to take it away from us," said Australia's stand-in captain Shane Watson.
 
"This is really as foreign as you get to playing cricket for an Australian cricket team. It's been a great learning curve for all of us. everyone has got a hell of a lot out of this tour," he added when asked about the surfaces in India.

Jadeja who was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance said: "I did well in this game. the wicket helped the spinners so I was bowling well. Just wanted to get as many as possible. Unfortunately I didn't score much runs with the bat, but I bowled well in the series."
 
Ashwin (below) was adjudged man of the series for taking 29 wickets in four Tests.

"Everything has gone pretty well, there were a few changes I had to make after the England series. Very happy at how it has come out. I had to work on my delivery stride, I had to work on it. We had very little time, I was lucky to have a coach to identified it pretty quickly," said Ashwin.

The 100 partnership between Pujara and Kohli for the second wicket comes in 119 balls.

Kohli has crashed Maxwell through point for his third boundary and fails to hold onto a return chance couple of balls later.

Pujara completes his third Test fifty off 54 with a single off Lyon.

It was spiced with seven hits to the ropes.

India need 83 runs for victory with nine wickets in hand.

Pujara is unbeaten on 40 off 39 balls with six boundaries while Kohli is with him on 16 off 21 with two boundaries.

The pair have added 53 runs in 51 balls for the unfinished second wicket.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Pujara has hit three boundaries including two in succession off Johnson as India race to victory.

Kohli has whipped a loose delivery from Lyon to square leg boundary to bring up the 50 of the Indian second innings in the ninth over.

Australia are all out for 164 in 46.3 overs in their second innings after dismissing India for 272 in their first innings on the third day of the fourth and final Test at Feroz Shah Kolta ground in Delhi on Sunday.

Siddle (below)  top scored once again with a defiant knock of 50.

Jadeja finished with a haul of five for 58, Ashwin two for 55 and Ojha claimed two for 19.

Sharma picked up one for 12 breaking the dangerous ninth wicket stand of 35 between Siddle and Pattinson.

Siddle completes twin fifties becoming the first No.9 batsman to do so.

It is his second ODI fifty which came off 44 balls and contained seven boundaries.

Steven Smith is unbeaten on 17 off 50 balls with one boundary while Mathew Wade is with him on 16 off 29 balls having hit two streaky boundaries.

The pair have added 36 runs in 12.2 overs for the unfinished sixth wicket.

Kumar remained unbeaten on 14 as India added six runs to their overnight total of 266-8 to enjoy a slender lead of 10 runs in the first innings.

Last man Pragyan Ojha was trapped leg before for a first-ball duck as Lyon finished with a career-best seven for 94.

DAY TWO - INDIA FORGE AHEAD DESPITE LYON'S HAUL

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is unbeaten on 10 after Ashwin fell in the last over of the second day.

CLARKE CONFIDENT OF BEING FIT FOR ASHES

Australia clawed back to restrict India who got off to a flying start with openers Vijay (57) and Pujara (52) putting on 108 runs in 25.1 overs.

Off spinner Nathan Lyon who was introduced after 19 overs kept pegging away to claim five for 94 off 22.1 overs during his marathon spell.
