India vs Bangladesh 3rd ODI: India win to avoid whitewash

Brisk half-centuries from India's Shikhar Dhawan and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped set up a 77-run victory against Bangladesh in the third and final one-day international and stave off a 3-0 whitewash.

Opener Dhawan's 73-ball 75 and Dhoni's 69 off 77 balls laid the foundation for India's 317-6 in their 50 overs after Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and put the visitors in to bat with threat of rain in the evening.

The rain, however, did not arrive and Bangladesh, who had comfortably won the first two ODIs of the three-match series, were bundled out for 240 in 47 overs.

Soumya Sarkar gave Bangladesh a rollicking start in their chase despite losing his opening partner Tamim Iqbal (five) in the second over and the hosts crossed 50 inside seven overs.

But paceman Dhawal Kulkarni, who also dismissed Tamim, pegged Bangladesh back by sending back the dangerous Sarkar after his 34-ball 40, that included five fours and two sixes.

Barring Tamim, most of Bangladesh's recognised batsmen got starts but none of them managed to convert them into meaningful contributions and got out trying to keep up with the required run rate.

Suresh Raina, whose 21-ball 38 ensured a 300-plus total for India, was the most successful bowler with his part-time off-spin and picked up 3-45 in his eight overs.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets while giving away 35 runs in his full quota of 10 overs.

Earlier, India lost Rohit Sharma (29) after a decent start but managed to maintain a healthy run rate on the slow Mirpur surface through a 75-run stand for the second wicket between Dhawan and India's Test captain Virat Kohli (25).

Left-handed Dhawan looked in sublime touch and hit 10 fours in his knock before he mistimed a pull shot against Mortaza straight to Nasir Hossain at mid-wicket where the fielder timed his jump perfectly to complete the catch over his head.

Dhoni then combined with Ambati Rayudu (44) for a fruitful stand of 93 for the fourth wicket before falling to Mortaza, caught well by Mustafizur Rahman in the deep.

Raina then provided the late assault with three fours and two sixes to help set up a steep chase for the hosts.

Mashrafe took three wickets but gave away 76 in his 10 overs while left-arm paceman Mustafizur picked up two more wickets to take his tally to 13 wickets in his debut series.

Bangladesh innings

Suresh Raina scored a brisk 38 from 21 balls and bagged three wickets as India beat Bangladesh by 77 runs in the third ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

India posted 317 for 6 after Bangladesh won the toss and sent the visitors in.

Shikhar Dhawan (75) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (69) nothced half centuries, while Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman bagged three and two wickets respectively.

Bangladesh gave the Indian a good fight but Raina struck crucial blows and with Ravichandran Ashwin and Dhawal Kulkarni bagging two wickets each Bangladesh were outplayed.

Part-time bowler Rayudu gets the last wicket of Mustafizur and India win by 77 runs but the series goes to Bangladesh 2-1.

Rubel hands Axar an easy catch in the deep. Raina bags his third wicket.

Bangladesh tailenders seem content on playing out the 50 overs.

Bangladesh's last hope Nasir Hossain is gone top-edging a miscued shot into the hands of Rayudu.

Mortaza goes for a wild heave and misses and Ashwin gets his first wicket.

Mashrafe Mortaza b Ashwin 0 (9b 0x4 0x6)

DROPPED! Dhawal miscued top-edge from Mortaza.

Binny has got the dangerman Sabbir out at a crucial juncture just when the batsman had begun to throw his bat around.

Sabbir Rahman b Binny 43 (38b 6x4 0x6)

Yadav's pace is to Nasir Hossain's liking and the batsman clobbers him for two fours in an over.

Shakib took one risk too many and holes out to Kulkarni.

Mushfiqur tries to slice Raina through slips but edges to Dhoni.

Mushfiqur Rahim c Dhoni b Raina 24 (30b 0x4 1x6)

Sarkar was looking dangerous but in trying to send Kulkarni out of the ground top-edges it to Ashwin.

Soumya Sarkar c Ashwin b Kulkarni 40 (34b 5x4 2x6)

Sarkar stands and delivers, this time it's Kulkarni who faces the brunt as he is whacked for six.

Sarkar takes Binny to the cleaners with back-to-back boundaries.

Tamim's wicket doesn't seem to have bogged Soumya Sarkar down as he goes after Binny hitting him for a six and a four.

DROPPED! Binny is given to open the bowling and almost gets Soumya Sarkar out but his attempt at a return catch is futile.

India innings

Shikhar Dhawan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit half-centuries as India posted a challenging 317-6 in the third one-day international against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Dhawan made 75 and Dhoni 69 as the visitors strove to avoid an unprecedented one-day series whitewash at the hands of their less illustrious neighbours, having lost the first two matches comprehensively.

Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza took three wickets for Bangladesh but conceded 76 runs in the process after he elected to field first at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Rohit Sharma gave India a positive start before left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman got a breakthrough.

Mustafizur, who grabbed 11 wickets in the first two matches, picked up Rohit for the third time in the series as wicketkeeper Litton Das took a regulation catch for 29.

Dhawan and Virat Kohli put on 75 for the second wicket to steady the innings before they were separated by left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan.

Kohli went for a wild slog-sweep but missed the line to be bowled for 25.

Nasir Hossain pulled off a stunning catch at short midwicket off Mortaza to dismiss Dhawan, who faced 73 balls and hit 10 fours for his second fifty of the series.

Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu did not let the momentum slip as they put on 93 for the fourth wicket.

Rayudu was unlucky to miss out on his half-century when he was given out caught behind off Mortaza for 44. Replays suggested the ball hit only his thigh pad.

Bangladesh managed to get rid of Dhoni before he became yet more dangerous when Mustafizur took a catch at deep midwicket off Mortaza.

Dhoni, who promoted himself to  number four in the order for the second time in the series, faced 77 balls for his innings that included six fours and six.

Suresh Raina added a quick-fire 38 off 21 balls before Mustafizur bowled him to take his tally to 13 in the series and finish the day with 2-57.

Stuart Binny, one of the two changes for India in the game, was unbeaten on 17, helping India past the 300-run mark.

Half centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (75), skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (69) and a superb cameo from Suresh Raina (38) lifted India to 317 for 6 against Bangladesh in the third ODI at the ShereBangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on Wednesday.

Suresh Raina b Mustafizur Rahman 38 (21b 3x4 2x6)

Raina pulls Mortaza to his favourite zone over mid-wicket for six and then finds the gap for a four.

Some streaky shots by Raina and Binny gets India some bonus runs but that also annoys Bangladesh players.

Mortaza bags his third wicket after Mustafizur pulls off a superb catch in the deep to get rid of Dhoni.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni c Mustafizur Rahman b Mashrafe Mortaza 69 (77b 6x4 1x6)

Raina wastes little time in getting after the bowlers hitting Rubel for a six.

Rayudu is not happy with the decision as he thinks the ball hit his pads.

Ambati Rayudu c Litton Das b Mashrafe Mortaza 44 (49b 3x4 0x6)

Dhoni smashes Mortaza straight down the wicket for a four.

Captain Mortaza goes for 10 runs. Bangladesh will have to be careful here as Dhoni and Rayudu look set.

DROPPED! Rayudu gives Sunny the charge and hits it straight to the bowler but Sunny could not latch onto it. Tough chance though but could prove crucial as the partnership is looking dangerous.

Dhoni begins to cut loose, targetting Rubel for some runs to reach his half century.

Dhoni and Rayudu bring up the 50-run partnership from 62 balls with the Indian skipper driving Rubel for a four through covers.

Bangladesh have applied the brakes on India's free scoring which forces Dhoni to go in for the batting powerplay.

Dhawan's over-confidence gets the better of him, slashing at Mortaza to mid-wicket where Nasir takes a brilliant catch.

Shikhar Dhawan c Nasir Hossain b Mashrafe Mortaza 75 (73b 10x4 0x6)

Bangladesh are leaking runs here and Dhawan is quick to pounce on it with another four from Shakib to bring up India's 150.

The Indian skipper is looking in ominous form, maybe trying to prove a point as he smashes Rubel for runs.

Dhoni is keen to shift gears, this time going after Shakib with a four and three runs.

Dhoni vents his frustration against Nasir hitting him for a four and six after he played out a maiden over against Shakib earlier.

Kohli tries the big slog across wicket and the slower ball from Shakib finds the gap between bat and pad to hit the stumps.

Virat Kohli b Shakib Al Hasan 25 (35b 1x4 0x6)

Kohli and Dhawan go after Arafat Sunny. Dhawan sweeps him for four for his 50.

Kohli gets his first boundary flicking Nasir Hossain over mid-wicket.

Dhawan and Kohli in 50-run partnership

DROPPED! Dhawan tries a reverse sweep and keeper Litton Das makes a valiant effort to catch it, but that should have been taken.

Lovely timing from Dhawan which bisects two players on the off-side on the way to the boundary.

Dhawan in complete control over a pull shot which sails over the keeper's head for four.

Dhawan gets into overdrive spanking Rubel Hossain for four.

An overthrow from Tamim Iqbal and that gives India five runs apart from the cheeky single Dhawan and Kohli ran.

Dhawan plays his patent shot through the off-side of Mustafizur, one of those lose deliveries from the left-arm pacer.

Rohit slashes at an outside ball and the result is a catch to the keeper.

Rohit Sharma c Litton Das b Mustafizur Rahman 29 (29b 2x4 1x6)

Rohit caresses Mustafizur through covers for four.

Rohit comes down the wicket to hoist Arafat Sunny over long on for a six.

Dhawan plays and misses and Mortaza appeals for a caught behind although the keeper is not interested.

Dhawan thumps Mortaza with a gentle push through the off-side for four. Mortaza is proving expensive although Mustafizur is keeping it tight.

Rohit steps down the pitch and pulls Mortaza over cover for four and then pulls him over leg side for three runs.

We are fve minutes away from the start of the match.

Mashrafe Morataza won the toss and elected to bowl. India have made two changes and Bangladesh one.

Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday defended under-fire skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who says he is willing to step aside as captain following their first ever one-day series defeat to Bangladesh.

Ashwin's said Dhoni was not to blame for India's embarrassing losses in the first two matches of the series to minnows Bangladesh, saying "we failed as a group".

India suffered a thumping six-wicket loss to Bangladesh on Sunday in Dhaka, sealing the international series for the hosts.

"He (Dhoni) is a legend of Indian cricket. He has done so much for the nation," Ashwin said at a press conference in Dhaka ahead of the third and final match on Wednesday.

"You can't blame him for the whole team's performance. That's not fair. We have failed as a group. We need to grow up as a group."

Ashwin, Dhoni's team-mate in the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings, said the team was fully behind its captain.

"As far as I am concerned it's like an army, if you don't go behind your leader then you are definitely going to get shot."

Dhoni, who turns 34 next month and is regarded as India's best limited-overs player, has won a string of trophies for India since taking the helm in 2007.

But the losses in Bangladesh again raised questions about his recent form as captain after India's semi-final exit from the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year.

The wicket keeper-batsman quit Test captaincy midway through the Australia tour in December and was replaced by batsman Virat Kohli.

"If it is a justifiable thing that if you remove me and Indian cricket will start doing really well, and if I am the reason for all the bad that is happening to Indian cricket, definitely I would love to step away and play as a player," Dhoni said after Sunday's loss.
