Dhawan scored his second consecutive Test century and fourth Test ton overall as India overhauled Sri Lanka's first innings total of 183 in the first session of Day 2.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan scored his second consecutive hundred as he and captain Virat Kohli took India past Sri Lanka's first innings total on the second day of the opening test at Galle on Thursday.

Kohli was oout lbw by Tharindu Kaushal right after scored his century (102).

Next batsman A Rahane was out lbw by Tharindu Kaushal. He did not open his scoring board.

Sri Lanka, all out for 183 in their first innings, had a few half chances in the morning session but otherwise failed to trouble the batsmen on the slow pitch at the Galle International Stadium.

Left-handed Dhawan, who scored 173 against Bangladesh in India's last test in June, hit a cover drive for four off paceman Dhammika Prasad to complete his fourth test century.

The 29-year-old, who was dropped on 28 by home captain Angelo Mathews off Tharindu Kaushal on Wednesday, has hit 11 fours in his knock so far.

Kohli, in his first full series as India's test captain, has hit nine fours and looked set for his 11th hundred in tests.
