IPL6: Bisla, Morgan power Kolkata to easy win over Punjab

Kolkata Knight Riders coasted to a six-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab in Match 32 of IPL at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.

Chasing 150 to win, Manvinder Bisla steered them home with an unbeaten knock of 50 from 43 balls.

Azhar Mahmood rocked Kolkata with a double strike early on when he dismissed Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan.

Bisla kept his cool at the other end. His knock contained three boundaries and as many sixes.

Jacques Kallis and Eoin Morgan supported him with brilliant knocks to steady their innings during the run-chase.

Kallis scored a 33-ball 37 including six boundaries but Morgan stole the show in the end smashing a 26-ball 42 with the help of four sixes and three fours as they achieved the target with 10 balls to spare.

Mahmood finished with three for 35..

Earlier, a cameo from Gurkeerat Singh at the end helped Punjab reached a challenging 149 for 6 in 20 overs.
 
Kings XI Punjab made good start with the top order coming good before Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers pulled back the initiative in their favour.

It was good to see skipper Adam Gilchirst spend some time in the middle after winning the toss.

He scored a gritty 27 from as many balls cracking four boundaries.

He shared a 45-run stand with Mandeep Singh (25, 20b, 5x4), the best opening partnership for Punjab this season.

Manan Vohra (31, 21b, 3x4, 1x6) and David Hussey (21, 20b, 1x4) chipped in with significant contributions to further consolidate Punjab’s innings before Kolkata bowlers Sunil Narine and Jacques Kallis tightened it up completely for Punjab.

But Gurkeerat played a superb knock including an eventful final over off Balaji to smash an unbeaten 28 off 15 balls consisting of two boundaries and two sixes.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS INNINGS

That's it, a no-ball and Kolkata win by six wickets. They needed this win badly.

After banging two huge sixes, Morgan departs, but he has done the job for Kolkata as they just need another 2 runs to win.

Bisla is just one short of his half century. Kolkata are 135 for 3 in 17 overs.

Morgan and Bisla are going good. Partnership crosses 50. Kolkata inching closer to victory. They are 127 for 3 in 16 overs.

It's all going easy for Kolkata. A boundary and a six makes the equation very easy. They are 118 for 3 in 15 overs.

Except the boundary it was a good over for Mahmood and Punjab. But they need wickets at this stage as Kolkata reach 106 for 3 in 14 overs.

That's a great over for Kolkata. They get 14 runs including a six and a boundary. Kolkata are 101 for 3 in 13 overs.

Good and lucky over for Kolkata. Some close ones but they would not mind as long as runs keep coming in. 11 runs off that over. Kolkata are 87 for 3 in 12 overs.

Eoin Morgan comes in to bat. Great over from Harmeet Singh as he gives only one run in his first over. Kolkata are 76 for 3 in 11 overs.

Big wicket for Punjab. Harmeet Singh strikes in his first over to remove the dangerous Kallis.

Kolkata going strong. Punjab quickly need some wickets. Kolkata are 75 for 2 in 10 overs.

A boundary from Kallis and 11 overs coming from that over. Kolkata looking good at this stage. They now need 84 off 66balls.

Good over for Punjab. Just three runs coming off that. Kolkata are 55 for 2 in 8 overs.

Chawla cannot stop the run flow. His first over is seven runs expensive. Kolkata are 52 for 2 in 7 overs.

Two boundaries from that over off Kallis and Kolkata are 45 for 2 in 6 overs.

Praveen gives away eight runs as Kolkata reach 36 for 2 in 5 overs.

Mahmood is expsnsive this over. Gives away 12 runs including a nice six from Bisla. Kolkata are 28 for 2 in 4 overs.

A fine over from Praveen. Just two runs from that. Kolkata are 16 for 2 in 3 overs.

What an over from Mahmood. A dropped catch to begin with but that did not affect Mahmood as he claims two big wickets. Kallis steadies with a boundary. Kolkata are 14 for 2 in 2 overs.

Yusuf Pathan comes and goes immediately, in the very first ball. Brilliant bowling from Mahmood.

G Gambhir b Azhar Mahmood 8 (6b 2x4 0x6)

Everythign happening there. After the drop catch, Mahmood gets a beauty to bowl Gambhir. Kolkata 10 for 1 in 1.2 overs.

Sloppy fielding and Mandeep drops an easy one. Bisla gets a reprieve.

Gambhir gets two boundaries and Kolkata make a bright start with 9 for 0 in 1 over.

Manvinder Bisla and Gautam Gambhir open for Kolkata, Praveen Kumar opens the bowling for Punjab.

KINGS XI PUNJAB INNINGS

Two runs coming of the first two balls of the final over off Balaji. Punjab are 141 for 6. Another six off the last ball and Punjab are 149 for 6. Looks to be a good total.

Azhar Mahmood run out 2 (7b 0x4 0x6)

Runs drying up for Punjab and wickets falling frequently. Narine is bowling exceptionally. The pressure gets on Azhar Mahmood and he is run out. Punjab are 131 for 6 in 19 overs.

Kolkata bowlers dominating. Kallis bowls another brilliant over to give just three from that over. PUnjab are 129 for 5 in 18 overs. Punjab badly need to get going.

D Hussey c Senanayake b Kallis 21 (20b 1x4 0x6)

Pressure getting on to Punjab. David Hussey goes for a big one but does not get the distance. Punjab 126 for 5 in 17.2 overs.

Good tight over from Narine. Six from that over. Punjab are 126 for 4 in 17 overs. Punjab need some big ones now.

Some sloppy fielding by Pathan in the deep. Nine of the over. Punjab are 120 for 4 in 16 overs

A fine over by Ladda, Punjab are 111 for 4 in 15 overs. David Hussey in focus now.

D Miller b Ladda 10 (8b 0x4 1x6)

Ladda gets smashed for a six from Miller but a beauty immediately rattles the stumps of Miller. Punjab are 109 for 4 in 14.4 overs.

Punjab are 103 for 3 in 14 overs.

M Vohra c Das b Balaji 31 (21b 3x4 1x6)

After getting smashed for a boundary and a six, Balaji takes his revenge to end Vohra. Punjab are 98 for 3 in 13 overs.

It's going nice and smooth for Punjab. They are now 85 for 2 in 12 overs.

Half way through the innings. Vohra gets a boundary and Punjab are 72 for 2 in 10 overs.

A Gilchrist c Morgan b Bhatia 27 (27b 4x4 0x6)

Rajat Bhatia strikes in his first over, removes Gilchrist. Punjab are 67 for 2 in 9.3 overs.

Four runs off that Kallis over and Punjab are 64 for 1 in 9 overs.

Sarabjit Ladda has a decent over, except for the boundary from Gilchrist. Punjab are 60 for 1 in 8 overs.

Manan Vohra gets off the mark in style cracking a lovely boundary. Punjab are 50 for 1 in 7 overs.

Mandeep Singh c Morgan b Kallis 25 (20b 5x4 0x6)

Kallis comes into bowl and he strikes immediately. Gets Mandeep off a slower one. Punjab 45 for 1.

Gilchrist is slowly but steadily settling in, cracks two boundaries and it's the typical Gilly for you. Punjab 45 for 0 in 6 overs.

Interesting contest in the middle between Narine and Mandeep. As Mandeep struggles to read the turn he still manages two boundaries as Punjab are 33 for no loss in 5 overs.

Gilchrist finally gets cracking. Gets his first boundary as Punjab 23 for 0 in 4 overs.

Two boundaries from Mandeep off Balaji and Punjab reach 15 for 0 in 3 overs.

Spin worked for Kolkata. Maiden over from Sachithra Senanayake. Gilchrist taking time, Punjab are 5 for 0 in 2 overs.

Action packed first over. A boundary, a missed run-out and just five runs. Balaji did a good job. Punjab are 5 for 0 in 1 over.

Gilchrist and Mandeep Singh open for Punjab. Balaji bowls for Kolkata.

Gilchrist has had a bad season so far. Will be looking to turn his fortunes tonight.

It’s difficult times for defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the moment.

Lying seventh in the points table KKR are looking for a desperate win as they take on Kings XI Punjab in Match 35 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.

They have the home advantage but Punjab are looking strong sitting two places ahead of the hosts.

Furthermore, Punjab also have back to back wins against Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils and they will be keen to continue the winning momentum.
