IPL6: Chennai go top after 14-run win over Kolkata

Chennai Super Kings surged to the top of the table with a thrilling 14-run win over the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 38 of IPL6 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

KKR fell short despite a superb unbeaten 92 off 61 balls from Manvinder Bisla.

He fell in the 19th over to a brilliant throw from Hussey having struck 14 fours and two sixes during his knock.

KKR got a good start with an extras-ridden opening over by Dirk Nannes, but Morris soon removed Gautam Gambhir.

They were set back by the dismissal of McCullum playing onto Mohit Sharma after six overs.

After Kallis departed, Bisla and Eoin Morgan kept them in the hunt, bringing the target down to 29 off the last two overs.

Morgan remained unbeaten on 32 off 22 balls hammering two boundaries and two sixes.

Needing 19 off the last over, Morris gave away just four runs to seal victory for Chennai.

Kolkata Knight Riders were made to rue their decision to put Chennai Super Kings into bat first as the two-time champions posted 200 for three.

Michael Hussey continued his prolific run with another swashbuckling half century.

Saha and Hussey laid the foundation for Chennai's big total with a 103-run stand in 61 balls containing six sixes and 20 fours.

Saha made 39 off 23 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

Raina continued the momentum by smashing a 25-ball 44 with four boundaries and a six.

Hussey fell five short of a century with his 59-ball 95 being studded with 11 fours and two sixes.

Dhoni who was unbeaten on 18 smashed a six off the last ball to help reach the 200 mark.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS INNINGS

Morris bowls a tight last over conceding just four runs to deny Kolkata as their brave run chase ends at 186-4.

KKR need 19 off the last over with Morgan on strike with Morris bowling.

Bisla is run out by a brilliant throw from Hussey with KKR needing 23 from 9 balls.

Who would have predicted that this match would go to the wire.

A big over for Kolkata. Nannes goes for 21 with Morgan hammering a six and Bisla a six and two boundaries. KKR 172-3 in 18 overs.

Bisla smashes a couple of boundaries off Bravo in the 17th but it is a tough task. KKR 151-3 in 17 overs.

Morgan has thumped a boundary and six off Nannes to close the gap and keep alive Kolkata's hopes of an unlikely win. KKR 138-3 in 16 overs.

Bisla hits Bravo for a boundary in the 15th. KKR 126-3 in 15 overs.

Ashwin goes for 12 in the 14th with Bisla getting a couple of boundaries off full tosses. KKR 119-3 in 14 overs.

Bisla completes his half century off 43 balls with a boundary off Ashwin.

Morgan gets a streaky boundary off Bravo but the required is mounting. KKR 107-3 in 13 overs.

Bravo strikes with his second delivery as Kallis scoops straight to Nannes at fine leg. KKR 99-3.

Bisla survives a stumping chance after attempting a reverse sweep. KKR 99-2 in 12 overs.

Kallis takes on Jadeja slamming him over the sight screen for a six and survives a stumping chance. KKR 94-2 in 11 overs.

Kallis gets a life on six as Raina drops him while Bisla continues to attack hammering Ashwin for a six. KKR 85-2 in 10 overs.

It's tough going for Kolkata with Jadeja conceding just four runs in his first over. KKR 76-2 in 9 overs.

Spin introduced as Jadeja comes into the attack in the ninth over.

Sharma also bowls a good over giving away just five runs. KKR 72-2 in 8 overs.

Nannes bowls a tight seventh over conceding just four runs. KKR 67-2 in 7 overs.

Kolkata suffered a major setback in the last ball of the Powerplay overs as McCullum is bowled by Sharma off an inside edge. KKR 63-2.

Morris goes for 18 in his second over with Bisla cracking four boundaries. KKR 51-1 in 5 overs.

Excellent over from Mohit Sharma giving just one run. KKR 33-1 in 4 overs.

Morris has struck after being hit for a couple of boundaries by castling Gambhir. KKR 32-1.

Bisla hits his first boundary off Sharma punching him through the covers. KKR 24-0 in 2 overs.

Nannes is erratic his opening over which goes for 18 with Gambhir slamming him through cover for the first boundary. KKR 18-0 in 1 over.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS

Dhoni hammers a six off Balaji's final delivery as Chennai posted the tournament highest total of 200-3.

Kallis bowls a tight 19th over conceding 9 runs with Raina getting a boundary. CSK 188-2 in 19 overs.

Balaji bowls a tight 18th over before Dhoni drills him back to the fence. CSK 179-2 in 18 overs.

Raina hits a boundary off Kallis and survives a run out scare. CSK 168-2 in 17 overs.

Dhoni has promoted himself up the order and his intentions are clear with four overs remaining. CSK 158-2 in 16 overs.

Hussey is dismissed five short of a well-deserved century swinging straight to Das at midwicket having added 55 runs in 34 balls for the second wicket with Raina. CSK 158-2.

Hussey continues to make merry smashing Pathan for a huge six. CSK 151-1 in 15 overs.

Raina slams his 100th six off Narine and also finishes the over with a boundary. CSK 139-1 in 14 overs.

Hussey slams a couple of boundaries off Bhatia through point and square leg. CSK 127-1 in 13 overs.

Hussey hooks Bhatia for another boundary to fine leg.  CSK 114-1 in 12 overs.

Kolkata finally make a breakthrough as Bhatia strikes to dismiss Saha who holes out to Morgan. CSK 103-1.

Hussey (630 and Saha (39) have given Chennai a solid start being 103 for no loss at the halfway stage.

Hussey is really turning it on smashing Bhatia over extra cover for another boundary. CSK 96-0 in 9 overs.

Hussey slams Kallis over midwicket for his second six and completes his fifty off 31 balls. CSK 86-0 in 8 overs.

Bhatia bowls a tight seventh over conceding just five runs. CSK 72-0 in 7 overs.

Kallis goes for 18 in his first over with Saha hammering a boundary and six to power Chennai to 67 for no loss at the end of Powerplay overs. CSK 67-0 in 6 overs.

Narine comes into the attack but there is no respite for Kolkata with Hussey cracking a couple of boundaries. CSK 49-0 in 5 overs.

Saha hits the 300th six of the tournament and a couple of boundaries off Ahmed. CSK 40-0 in 4 overs.

Hussey is on song cracking three boundaries off Balaji. CSK 25-0 in 3 overs.

Hussey hits the first boundary of the match flicking Shami Ahmed to fine leg. CSK 11-0 in 2 overs.

Kolkata have won the toss and put Chennai into bat.

Brendon McCullum and Shami Ahmed come in for KKR replacing Senanayake and Ladda.
