IPL6: Chennai seal superb 15-run win over Punjab

A sensational unbeaten century from Suresh Raina ensured Chennai Super Kings defeated Kings XI Punjab by 15 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

Raina was in a blistering mood as he smashed 100 not out in just 53 balls studded with nine boundaries and six sixes as Chennai made a formidable 186 for four in 20 overs.

The home crowd was provided with a lot to cheer as Raina reached the three-digit mark in the final over of the Chennai innings.

Hussey (35, 29b, 3x4) and Albie Morkel (23, 16b, 2x4, 1x4) were the other significant contributors.

In reply, Punjab put on an impressive chase despite losing two quick wickets. Shaun Marsh and David Hussey (22, 16b, 2x4, 1x6) shared 37 runs for the third wicket.

Once Hussey departed Marsh and Miller took the chase to a different level and revived the hopes of chasing down the target.

Marsh scored a superb 73 from 51 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes while Miller smashed 51 off 26 deliveries including five boundaries and two sixes.

Needing 16 runs off the final over, Bravo bagged three wickets as Punjab were restricted to 171 for six in 20 overs.

KINGS XI PUNJAB INNINGS

It's all over and Chennai celebrate and remain intact at the top of table. Punjab put a good fight but they needed a couple of more big hits.

R Sathish lbw b Bravo 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)

Bravo picks another. What a ball to trap Satish in front. Chennai are 171 for 6 in 19.5 overs.

Punjab need 16 off 2 and Chennai crowd is already celebrating.

That's another wicket for Bravo and Gurkeerat is neatly caught in the deep by Hussey. Punjab are 168 for 5 in 19.2 overs.

S Marsh b Bravo 73 (51b 8x4 2x6)

Bravo strikes in the first ball. Marsh is bowled. Punjab are 168 for 4 in 19.1 overs.

So it's the final over. Punjab need 16 runs from it. Marsh on 73 and he is on strike. Can he take his team all the way?

Punjab still giving Chennai a run for the money. Last ball six from Miller in that over raises their hopes. Punjab are 157 for 3 in 18 overs.

A tough equation for Punjab. They are 145 for 3 in 17 overs.

Marsh gets two boundary in that over of Bravo. Punjab are 133 for 3 in 16 overs.

That's the 50 partnership for Marsh and Miller. They need to carry on.

It's still Chennai's game. But with Marsh and Miller around anything is possible. Punjab are 122 for 3 in 15 overs.

Great knock from Marsh. But he still has a tough task on hand as Punjab need a huge 75 from 36 balls. Looks difficult but nothing's impossible.

Two back to back sixes and a boundary from Marsh puts Punjab in the reckoning. Need 95 off 48 balls.

D Hussey c Bravo b Ashwin 22 (16b 2x4 1x6)

Hussey was looking threatening but after making a good start this over off Ashwin he holed in in the deep to Bravo. Trouble for Punjab as they are 73 for 3 in 10.3 overs.

Halfway through. It's becoming increasingly difficult for Punjab. They need 122 from 60 balls.

Ashwin bowls an impressive first over. Only four runs coming off that over. Punjab are 57 for 2 in 9 overs.

Marsh, Hussey are doing fine. Take Punjab to 53 for 2 in 8 overs.

Mandeep Singh c Raina b Sharma 15 (15b 2x4 0x6)

Two boundaries had put Punjab in good position but Sharma ended Mandeep's run to claim his second wicket. Punjab are 36 for 2 in 6 overs

Four runs and Punjab score 27 for 1 in 5 overs.

Marsh seems to be going steady. A boundary from him and Punjab reach 23 for 1 in 4 overs.

Chennai dominating the proceedings at the moment. Only three runs from that over. Punjab are 16 for 1 in 3 overs.

L Pomersbach b Sharma 7 (9b 1x4 0x6)

A beauty of a delivery from Sharma as he rattles the stumps of Pomersbach. Punjab are 13 for 1 in 2 overs.

Mandeep and Pomersbach open. Good first over for Punjab, get eight runs off it. Punjab are 8 for no loss in 1 over.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS

Great knock. Spectacular innings. Raina scores a century off just 53 balls. 12 runs of the final over and Chennai are 186 for 4 in 20 overs.

Raina has three balls and needs three runs to reach his century. Can he get it?

Final over to go and Chennai are in a great position. Raina reaching 89. Chennai are 174 for 4 in 19 overs.

A Morkel c Miller b Awana 23 (16b 2x4 1x6)

Raina is going strong. Chennai are 132 for 3 in 16 overs.

A well-crafted innings. Raina reaches 50 off 32 balls. They are 116 for 3 in 15 overs.

Raina, Morkel steady innings. Chennai are 107 for 3 in 14 overs.

A good over for Punjab. But Raina is still in the middle. Chennai are 99 for 3 in 13 overs.

MS Dhoni run out 2 (2b 0x4 0x6)


Big wicket for Punjab. Dhoni is run out after a master class fielding from Satish. Chennai are 92 for 3 in 12.1 overs.

Dhoni is in. Raina is not affected with the wicket. A brilliant six off Chawla. Chennai are 91 for 2 in 12 overs.

Big catch. Punjab get the wicket of Hussey. Brilliant bowling from Chawla and a great piece of stumping.

Punjab need wicket as Chennai continue the score freely. They are 82 for 1 in 11 overs.

Raina and Hussey looking strong. Chennai are 69 for 1 in 10 overs.

Hussey and Raina going steady. But they need some big ones coming in regularly. Chennai are 49 for 1 in 8 overs.

Raina's boundary takes Chennai to 44 for 1 from 7 overs.

Awana gets another good over. Chennare are 36 for 1 in 6 overs. Raina and Hussey will look to explode soon.

Awana welcomed with a boundary from Hussey but he picks Waha four balls later. Chennai 27 for 1 in 3.5 overs.

Saha looks settled in. A nice pull to get a maximum and then a boundary off Praveen bowling. Chennai 22 for no loss in 3 overs.

Good start from Punjab. Gave only three runs. Punjab are 3 for no loss in 1 over.

Chennai have won the toss and have decided to bat.

Punjab have made two changes: Satish coming in for Manan Vohra and Luke Pomersbach replaces Azhar Mahmood.

Table-toppers Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Match 45 of IPL6 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

CSK have won their last six matches and certainly are the favourites.

This is the highest winning sequence, one short of the record seven set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011.

Kings XI Punjab meanwhile lie sixth in the standings with four wins from nine matches.

When these two teams met at Mohali earlier this season, CSK were runaway winners by 10 wickets.
