IPL6: Punjab win last-over thriller against Pune

A spectacular batting display from David Miller and Mandeep Singh gave Kings XI Punjab a thrilling seven-wicket victory over Pune Warriors in the penultimate ball at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali on Sunday night.

Needing 16 runs off the last over, Miller blasted two huge sixes off Luke Wright to the delight of their home crowd.

The pair shared a superb unbroken 128-run stand off 79 balls for the fourth wicket.

Miller remained unbeaten on 80 from 41 deliveries which was studded with five sixes and as many boundaries.

Mandeep was not out on 77 from 58 balls hitting seven boundaries.

Chasing an imposing target of 186, Punjab were in a state of bother when they lost two quick wickets but Manan Vohra scored a 13-ball 22 which was followed by a dream partnership that ensured Punjab sealed their third victory this season.

Earlier, Pune Warrior India put into bat first made a formidable 185 for four thanks to a blistery half century from Aaron Finch (65) and a brilliant 10-ball cameo of 34 from Luke Wright.

Pune's last four overs yielded 57 runs as Yuvraj and Wright turned it on with some amazing shots.

Pune were given a flying start by Robin Uthappa (37) and stand-in captain Finch who posted 83 in 10.3 overs before being separated.

Finch continued the onslaught with Yuvraj giving him company before holing out to Vohra.

Finch, dropped on one by Gilchrist, blasted eight boundaries and two sixes in his 42-ball 64.

Yuvraj was dismissed at the beginning of the 18th over having slammed three sixes and two boundaries in his 24-ball 34.

It was Wright who lifted Pune with an exhilarating knock of 34 which was studded with six boundaries and a six.

Mahmood claimed two for 42 while Awana and Gony picked up a wicket apiece.

KINGS XI PUNJAB INNINGS

Some sloppy fielding in the middle. So it all boils down to the final over. Punjab are 170 for 3 in 19 overs.

Two consecutive boundaries off Dinda and Punjab are now in a great chance of pulling it off.

That boundary from the last ball of Kumar has eased the equation a bit for Punjab, but they still need some more of those. Punjab are 157 for 3 in 18 overs.

No boundaries this over. Punjab need a couple of big ones. They are 149 for 3 in 17 overs.

Wright gets a taste of his own medicine as Miller slams a massive six and completes his first IPL fifty off just 29 balls. Punjab 141-3 after 16 overs need 45 from 24 balls.

Punjab are closing the gap with Mandeep hammering a boundary off Kumar. Punjab 129-3 after 15 overs needing 57 from 30 balls.

Mandeep Singh completes his fifty off 39 balls while Miller slams a boundary off Sharma in the 14th over. Punjab 121-3 need 65 from 36 balls.

Mandeep has scooped Dinda over square leg for a boundary. Punjab 111-3 in 13 overs needing 75 from 42 balls.

The 50 partnership between Mandeep and Miller for the fourth wicket comes off just 35 balls.

Miller is turning it on lofting Mendis for a towering six followed by a boundary to backward point. Punjab 102-3 in 12 overs need 84 from 48 balls.

Miller is leading Punjab's counter attack slamming a boundary off Wright. Punjab face a tall order needing 96 off 54 balls.

Millers hammers a massive six of Yuvraj as Punjab reach 83-3 at the halfway stage. Punjab need 103 off 60 balls.

Punjab are motoring along steadily being 72-3 after 9 overs.

Mendis returns without success conceding six runs in the 8th over. Punjab 65-3.

Yuvraj has broken a promising stand by bowling Vohra with his fourth delivery. Punjab 58-3 in 6.4 overs

Vohra and Mandeep are leading Punjab's recovery hammering a boundary apiece off Sharma as they reach 55-2 at the end of the Powerplay overs.

Rahul Sharma into the attack replacing Mendis whose two overs cost 20 runs for the wicket of Mahmood.

Vohra clips Dinda's first delivery to the square leg fence. Punjab 44-2 in 5 overs.

Punjab have recovered after the early setbacks with Mandeep Singh cracking a couple of boundaries off Mendis. Punjab 36-2 in 4 overs.

Mandeep hits Kumar for his first boundary. Punjab 26-2 in 3 overs.

Vohra gets a streaky boundary off Mendis whose first over goes for 10 for the wicket of Mahmood. Punjab 15-2 in 2 overs.

Ajantha Mendis has struck with his first delivery trapping new batsman Mahmood leg before. Punjab 5-2 in 1.1 overs.

Kumar goes for 20 in the 19th over with Wright going berserk hammering a couple of boundaries and a six. Pune 179-3 in 19 overs.

Mahmood gets the big wicket of Yuvraj but there is no respite for Punjab as Luke Wright playing his first match clubs four consecutive boundaries. Pune 159-3 in 18 overs.

Gurkeerat takes a superb catch running back as Yuvraj miscues a lofted shot. Pune 142-3.

Awana goes for 14 in the 17th over with Yuvraj smashing a couple of sixes. Pune 142-2.

Yuvraj is stepping on the gas beginning by slamming Awana over midwicket for his second six.

Gony bowls a tight final over claiming a wicket and giving away just four runs. Pune 128-2 in 16 overs.

Vohra takes a good catch to end a terrific knock by Finch. Pune 124-2.

Yuvraj also gets into the act sweeping Chawla over square leg for his first six and ends the over with a boundary to third man. Pune 116-1 in 14 overs.

Finch hits the 200th six of the tournament to reach his 50 off just 33 balls smashing Gony way over midwicket followed by a boundary. Pune 103-1 in 13 overs.

Punjab finally get a breakthrough as Uthappa nicks one to Gilchrist after having smashed a boundary two balls earlier off Awana. Pune 83-1

Chawla goes for nine in his second over with Finch rocking back and punching him through the covers for another boundary as Pune reach 77 for no loss at the halfway stage.

Uthappa also slams Gony over his head for another boundary. Pune 57-0 after 7 overs.

There is no stopping Finch as he pulls the first delivery from Gony for a boundary to backward square leg.

Kumar bowls a tight over giving away one leg bye as Pune reach 48 for no loss at the end of the Powerplay overs.

Uthappa has got into the act smashing Awana for his second boundary. Pune 47-0 in 5 overs.

Finch is on a roll pulling Mahmood to square leg for another boundary. Pune 37-0 after 4 overs.

Gilchrist's let off is turning out to be costly as Finch slams another boundary off Awana. Pune 28-0 after 3 overs.

Finch has blasted Mahmood for the first six followed by a boundary through extra cover. Pune 20-0 after 2 overs.

Gilchrist has dropped a sitter from Finch (1) off Mahmood in the second over.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have won the toss and put Pune Warriors India (PWI) into bat in Match 29 of IPL6 at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Sunday.

Both teams have so far won two matches.

Pune will be led by Aaron Finch.

Angelo Mathews and Mitchell Marsh have been replaced by Luke Wright and Ajantha Mendis.

Yuvraj is back and Delhi batsman Mithun Manhas is in as well. Suman and Pandey are out.

Kings XI have left out Mascarenhas and Valthaty for Miller and Awana.
