Preview

Former champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will battle to be crowned champions in the eighth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a fascinating T20 contest at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday.

It will also provide for an intriguing contest between the two-most successful T20 teams in the world.

CSK are top of the list of teams with 94 wins out of 155 matches while MI have 83 victories in 147 matches.

However, Mumbai start as favourites having won eight of their last nine matches this season and taking the direct route to the final by defeating CSK.

MI rose Phoenix-like after losing their first four matches to finish the league in second place.

Chennai will be playing in an IPL final for the sixth time but though they are the reigning Champions League T20 champions, an IPL title has eluded them for three seasons.

They won the IPL title in successive years in 2010 and 2011, but have since been pipped at the post in two finals.

Despite occupying the top slot in the league, they had to take a difficult route to the title clash winning a tense Eliminator against RCB.

Mumbai hold the edge in the overall head-to-head against Chennai 11-10.

MI have a 2-1 win-loss record against CSK this season.

CSK won the first match by six wickets while MI won the return clash by a similar margin.

In Qualifier 1, MI bowled out CSK for 162 to win by 25 runs.

Mumbai have a 6-2 win-loss record in IPL matches in Kolkata, while the Chennai have a 4-4 win-loss record at the venue.

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma will be under pressure to deliver on the big occasion while Captain Cool MS Dhoni has made a timely return to form for CSK.

West Indian Lendl Simmons is a destructive player.

CSK will be looking forward to a big contribution from Suresh Raina while Mr Cricket Michael Hussey could play the anchor role.

Sri Lankan pace ace Lasith Malinga will lead the MI's strike force complemented by Harbhajan Singh.

CSK will be banking on the spin trio of Ashwin, Jadeja and Pawan Negi.
