Afridi blitz in vain as New Zealand thrash Pakistan

Grant Elliot's all-round performance eclipsed Shahid Afridi's 29-ball blitz to secure New Zealand a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first One Day International in Wellington on Saturday.

Elliot took three wickets for 26 runs to help the hosts bowl out Pakistan for 210 in 45.3 overs at the Westpac Stadium.
 
He then returned to hit an unbeaten 64, adding 112 runs with Ross Taylor (59 not out) as New Zealand romped home with 10.3 overs to spare.

Earlier, Shahid Afridi blasted a 29-ball 67 and captain Misbah-ul-Haq stroked a patient 58 to help Pakistan overcome a terrible start and post 210 all out.

Put into bat, Pakistan lost their opener Mohammad Hafeez (0) to the fifth delivery of the day and kept losing wickets to slump to 127 for six in the 36th over.

Kiwi pacemen Kyle Mills (2-29) and Trent Boult (2-25) stifled the batsmen and struck at regular intervals to put Pakistan on the mat before Afridi went on the attack.
 
Dropped on 14 by rival captain Brendon McCullum, the flamboyant Pakistan all-rounder added 71 runs with Misbah in 6.2 overs to lend some respectability to the total before the visitors folded in 45.3 overs.

Afridi blasted nine boundaries in his blistering knock to go with three sixes, the third bringing up his fifty before Adam Milne dismissed him in the 44th over.

Misbah, who was content playing second fiddle to Afridi, perished in the 42nd over trying to accelerate, falling to Grant Elliot who claimed 3-26 and was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers.

New Zealand innings

New Zealand coasted to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Pakistan in the first one-day international at Wellington on Saturday.

Chasing a modest target of 211, the Black Caps romped home in the 40th over riding on unbeaten half centuries by Grant Elliott (64) and Ross Taylor (59) to finish on 213-3 in 39.3 overs.

For Pakistan, skipper Misbah ul Haq (58) and Shahid Afridi (67) hit half centuries as they were dismissed for 210 in 45.3 overs.

Elliott crashes Adil through the covers for the winning boundary as New Zealand win by seven wickets.

The 100 partership between Elliott and Taylor comes off 114 balls. NZ 202-3, 38 overs.

Elliott pulls a short ball from Irfan to fine leg for a boundary to reach his seventh ODI half century. NZ 196-3, 37 overs.

Taylor completes his 29th ODI half century off 72 balls. NZ 185-3, 35 overs.


Another good over for New Zealand with Elliott picking a boundary off Bhatti. NZ 176-3, 33 overs.

Elliott is on song crashing a short ball from Bhatti to midwicket and crunching another through the off for a couple of boundaries. NZ 162-3, 31 overs.

Elliott and Taylor have added 50 from 68 balls during their brisk unbroken fourth wicket stand as New Zealand cruise. NZ 151-3, 30 overs.

Left arm spinner Sohail comes into the attack now with Pakistan needing wickets. NZ 134-3, 26 overs.

Black Caps are in cruise control at the halfway stage of their run chase needing 79 from 150 balls. NZ 132-3, 25 overs.

Elliott gets a streaky boundary via an inside edge off Adil. NZ 126-3, 23 overs.

Elliott whips Irfan off his toes for a boundary. NZ 117-3, 21 overs.

Pakistan get a breakthrough as Guptill fails to keep down a snorter from Irfan with Bhatti taking a good catch. NZ 101-3, 18.3 overs.

Guptill survives a leg before appeal first ball off Irfan while Brendon McCullum flicks him away to fine leg for a boundary. NZ 6-0, 1 over.

Elliott finished with three for 26 while Mills, Boult and Anderson claimed two apiece.
