Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Day 1: Kaushal, Prasad skittle Pakistan for 138

Young off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal grabbed five wickets as Sri Lanka bundled out Pakistan for 138 on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Thursday.

Seamer Dhammika Prasad chipped in with three wickets as the tourists collapsed in 42.5 overs by tea after skipper Misbah-ul Haq elected to bat on a fresh, bouncy pitch at the P. Sara Oval.

Sri Lanka, looking for a series-levelling win after losing the first Test in Galle by 10 wickets, were 70 for one at stumps and well set to build a big first innings lead.

Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 18 and Kaushal Silva was on 21 after Dimuth Karunaratne was caught behind for 28 while trying to slash a wide ball from seamer Junaid Khan.

Kaushal, a 22-year-old playing only his second Test match, finished with five for 42 runs in 10.5 overs of accurate spin bowling in helpful conditions.

"It was good to bowl on this wicket," said Kaushal, who regards fellow off-spinner and world bowling record holder Muttiah Muralitharan as his hero.

"I occasionally bowled the 'doosra' and even managed to pick up a wicket with it. I am happy I was able to help the team do well on the field," he added.

Mohammad Hafeez top-scored with 42 as Pakistan lost eight wickets in the afternoon session after resuming at the lunch score of 70 for two.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis insisted the decision to bat first was correct because it was a good pitch to bat on.

"There were no demons in the pitch," the former fast bowler said. "Our shot selection was poor and Sri Lanka bowled well too. But we should have got a lot more runs than we did.

"Our bowlers too kept the runs in check and we need to continue the same way tomorrow."

Prasad, who took the field despite having suffered a finger injury during net practice on Wednesday, struck with the first ball of his second over to make it five for one.

He forced Ahmed Shehzad to edge a rising ball to second slip where the 37-year-old Kumar Sangakkara dived to his right to pick up a low catch.

Azhar Ali, who put on 46 for the second wicket with Hafeez, was dismissed for 26 when TV umpire Paul Reiffel upheld Sri Lanka's review for an edge off Prasad after on-field official Richard Illingworth had turned down the appeal.

Younis Khan, making his 100th Test appearance, survived a confident leg-before appeal on zero, but was caught behind by Dinesh Chandimal off Prasad for six in the first over after lunch.

Kaushal began his wicket hunt by bowling Hafeez in his fourth over and, six deliveries later, trapped Asad Shafiq leg-before for two as the tourists slid from 74-2 to 95-5.

A sharp shower just as Shafiq was walking back to the pavilion halted play for an hour, but Pakistan's woes multiplied on resumption.

Misbah ran himself out after making seven, failing to regain his ground after dashing down the wicket for a sharp single which was refused by non-striker Sarfraz Ahmed.

Sarfraz, the batting hero of Pakistan's victory at Galle, made 14 when he edged a drive off Kaushal on to his pad and the ball lobbed to Angelo Mathews in the slips.

Kaushal then claimed Wahab Riaz leg-before through a review after umpire Sundaram Ravi had turned down a loud shout from the bowler and the close-on fielders.

Zulfiqar Babar was bowled to give debutant seamer Dushmantha Chameera his first Test wicket, before a fine running catch at long-on by Sangakkara to dismiss Yasir Shah terminated the innings.

Pakistan retained the same side that won the first Test to take the lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka made two changes, replacing off-spinner Dilruwan Perera and seamer Nuwan Pradeep with Kaushal and Chameera.

Pakistan first innings

Sri Lanka off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal scythed through Pakistan's order to pick up his first five-wicket haul as the visitors were bundled out for 138 on the opening day of the second Test on Thursday.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was left to rue his decision to bat first after winning the toss as Sri Lanka's bowlers extracted enough movement from the P. Sara Oval pitch to dismiss their opponents in two sessions.

Kaushal, playing only his second test, came in as a replacement for the injured Dilruwan Perera and took all his wickets in the second session after fast bowler Dhammika Prasad picked up the first three.

Opener Mohammad Hafeez (42), who was hit on the back of his helmet by debutant fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, was the highest scorer for the visitors, who won the opening Test at Galle by 10 wickets.

An unchanged Pakistan lost Ahmed Shehzad (one) in the third over of the morning when the right-hander edged Prasad to first slip, where Kumar Sangakkara completed a sharp catch.

Hafeez and Azhar Ali (26) then added the only meaningful partnership of 46 for the second wicket.

Pakistan's one-day international captain Azhar looked fluent during his stay until he was originally given not out by the umpire to a caught behind appeal on the first ball of Prasad's second spell.

However, home skipper Angelo Mathews called for an immediate review and the on-field decision was overturned.

Younus Khan, playing his 100th Test, was lucky to survive another review from Mathews off his own bowling but fell immediately after lunch to give Prasad his third scalp.

Pakistan's hopes then rested on Misbah (seven) but the 41-year-old was run out after a misunderstanding with Sarfraz Ahmed (14), complicating things further for the visitors.

Such was the Kaushal's impact on the innings that Sri Lanka did not need their main spinner Rangana Herath to even bowl an over as the 22-year-old with a distinctive high-kneed run-up rose to the occasion on his home debut with figures of 5-42.

Sangkkara takes a brilliant catch in the outfield as Shah is the last man out to be bowled out for 138 in 42.5 overs.

Yasir Shah c Sangakkara b Kaushal 15 (17b 1x4 1x6)

Babar backs away and Chameera castles him to claim his maiden Test wicket. Pak 124-9, 41.4 overs.

Zulfiqar Babar b Chameera 5 (7b 1x4 0x6)

Kaushal is slicing through the Pakistan batting trapping Wahab leg before with Sri Lanka successfully overturning the original not out verdict. Pak 117-8, 40.2 overs.

Wahab Riaz lbw b Kaushal 4 (21b 0x4 0x6)

Kaushal claims his third wicket as Sarfraz perishes. Pak 113-7, 38.4 overs.

Sarfraz Ahmed c Mathews b Kaushal 14 (29b 0x4 0x6)

Pakistan run into further trouble as play resumes after the rain delay with Misbah being run out. Pak 96-6, 30.5 overs.

Misbah-ul-Haq run out 7 (20b 0x4 0x6)

Pakistan lose Shafiq failing to overturn the decision after being trapped leg before by Kaushal before a burst of rain stops play. Pak 95-5, 30.3 overs.

Asad Shafiq lbw b Kaushal 2 (7b 0x4 0x6)

Kaushal has struck with a big turner to bamboozle Hafeez who plays on. Pak 89-4, 28.3 overs.

Mohammad Hafeez b Kaushal 42 (75b 5x4 0x6)

Younis hits a boundary punching Prasad down the ground but perishes next ball gloving to the keeper even as he tries to move away. Pak 74-3, 24 overs.

Younis Khan c Chandimal b Prasad 6 (38b 1x4 0x6)

Lunch

Sri Lanka fast bowler Dhammika Prasad struck twice as Pakistan made a nervous start to second Test on Thursday, the tourists reaching lunch on 70 for two wickets as their batsmen struggled.

Mohammad Hafeez (31) and Younus Khan (two), playing his 100th Test for Pakistan, were together at the crease at the break after Misbah-ul-Haq had earlier won the toss and opted to bat.

An unchanged Pakistan, who won the first Test in Galle by 10 wickets, lost Ahmed Shehzad (one) in the third over when the right-hander edged Prasad to first slip, where Kumar Sangakkara completed a sharp catch.

Hafeez, who was hit on the back of his helmet by debutant fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, and Azhar Ali (26) then added 46 for the second wicket to steady the innings.

Pakistan's one-day international captain Azhar looked fluent during his stay until he was originally given not out by the umpire to a caught behind appeal on the first ball of Prasad's second spell.

However, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews called for an immediate review and the on-field decision was overturned.

Younus was lucky to survive another review from Mathews off his own bowling and battled through to reach lunch after a few more tense moments.

Sri Lanka made two changes to their bowling attack from the first Test, handing a debut to the 23-year-old Chameera in place of Nuwan Pradeep.

Off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal, 22, was called up for his second test appearance after he replaced the injured Dilruwan Perera.

"Spin is our strength so we are just going to bat first and get the advantage of bowling last," Misbah said at the toss while congratulating the 37-year-old Younus for the feat.

"Little bit grass on the pitch but still I think in Sri Lanka with the kind of weather it is going to get slower later on and assist the spinner."

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews was happy to get the first use of the pitch for his bowlers.

"We were looking to bowl first," Mathews said.

"It will definitely have a bit for the seamers in the first couple of sessions."

The third and final Test is in Pallekele from July 3-7 before the teams play five one-dayers and two Twenty20 matches.

Younis survives a confident appeal for leg before off Mathews with Sri Lanka losing the decision review. Pak 52-2, 17 overs.

Prasad strikes again with a beautiful outswinger which Azhar edges behind with Sri Lanka being successful in overturning a not out verdict after review. Pak 51-,2 15.1 overs.

Azhar Ali c Chandimal b Prasad 26 (45b 4x4 0x6)

Azhar cracks to consecutive boundaries off Mathews. Pak 20-1, 4 overs.

Prasad has drawn first blood in the third over as Shehzad edging to Sangakkara who takes a superb catch at first slip. Pak 5-1, 2.1 overs.

Ahmed Shehzad c Sangakkara b Prasad 1 (3b 0x4 0x6)

Pakistan have won the toss and elected to bat in the 2nd Test at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on Thursday.

The tourists field an unchanged side while Tharindu Kaushal and Chameera come in to the side in place of Nuwan Pradeep and Dilruwan Perera.

Pakistan are eager to celebrate senior batsman Younis Khan's 100th Test appearance with a series-clinching victory against Sri Lanka in the match starting Thursday in Colombo.

Misbah-ul Haq's tourists are riding high after a 10-wicket triumph in the opening Test in Galle even though the first four sessions of the match were washed out.

Misbah wants his team to perform equally well in the 37-year-old Khan's landmark Test at the P. Sara Oval and take an unbeatable lead in the three-match series - a feat which has eluded them on Sri Lankan soil since 2006.

"Younis is the backbone and a very special member of the Pakistan team," Misbah told reporters on Wednesday. "Playing 100 Tests is a huge achievement for any cricketer.

"He brings a lot of value to the team and brings a lot of good, positive energy. We all wish he can make his 100th Test memorable with a lot of runs. And we want to honour him by winning the match."

Khan will become only the fifth Pakistani to play 100 or more Tests after Javed Miandad (124), Inzamam-ul Haq (119), Wasim Akram (104) and Salim Malik (103).

Khan's 8,594 runs put him in third place among Pakistan's leading run-getters in Tests behind Miandad, who scored 8,832 runs, and Inzamam, who had 8,829.

Khan's 29 Test centuries, the same as Australian legend Donald Bradman, are the most by any Pakistan batsman. Inzamam is in second place with 25.

Khan said it was a "dream come true" to be playing his 100th Test, but he still has goals to fulfil before hanging up his boots.

"It's like a dream come true because I wished for it," he told the Cricinfo website. "When I played my first Test, I got a taste of this format and started developing a desire to play 100-plus Test matches.

"I will call off my career with grace, but I still have some goals in my mind and I am close to achieving those goals as well. I can't share that goal at this point, but you will know very soon."

Misbah said the tourists were hungry for further success after they fought back from 96-5 in their first innings to record an emphatic win in Galle.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah ripped through Sri Lanka's second innings with figures of seven for 76, leaving Pakistan a modest victory target of 90 runs.

"We gained a lot of confidence from the first Test and just want to carry that momentum in the remaining games," the 41-year-old Misbah said.

"Everyone is focused on tomorrow's Test. We can't afford to live in the past. Every new match is a fresh start."

Misbah hinted that all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was likely to bowl in the match even though umpires reported his action after the Galle Test for a second time in seven months.

Hafeez, who was cleared to bowl in April after being reported for the first time last November, is expected to undergo mandatory testing next week.

But regulations allow him to bowl till the test results are declared.

If his action is found to be illegal after testing, Hafeez will not be allowed to bowl for a year.

"It's very disappointing that he is under the radar again," said Misbah. "It can be so frustrating for the bowler to be reported a second time.

"But the good thing is that he can still bowl in this match and that's a plus point for us. He has an important role to play."

Pakistan recall Sohail from tour

Pakistan Wednesday recalled batsman Haris Sohail from the tour of Sri Lanka after he sustained a knee injury in practice, putting his participation in the one-day series that follows the Tests in doubt.

The 26-year-old has yet to play a Test but has been a regular part of the one-day squad since 2013. He has hit seven fifties in 22 games and has a healthy average of 43.

"Sohail is suffering from a tendon injury in his left knee sustained in a fielding practice session on June 19 in Galle, and he will be returning back tonight to undergo rehabilitation," the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.

No replacement has been named.
